WolfPack defeat Dubuque 88-74, running win streak to four

Ball security, interior dominance key home win over Spartans JV

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team continued its winning ways Monday with an 88-74 defeat of NCAA Division III University of Dubuque (IA) JV inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The 14-point decision comes in the first-ever meeting between the two programs, and extends the WolfPack's season-best win streak to four consecutive.

It took more than seven minutes for Madison College to earn their first lead of the night after the Spartans went up by four several times in the early goings. Freshmen Anthony Johnson and Brandon Robinson hit back-to-back buckets in the paint to give the WolfPack an 18-17 advantage, and a lead the home team would never relinquish. Those two baskets keyed a 21-7 run halfway through the first half that gave the 'Pack its first double-digit lead at 35-24.

Up ten to start the second half, Madison College opened with six straight points before seeing their advantage dwindle down to a two possession game at 54-48. The WolfPack kept UD at bay with a 9-0 burst capped by two Nathaniel Buss buckets, the first of two late game scoring flurries. The second, a 8-0 surge with three consecutive Tyree Young field goals put the game in hand with a little over two minutes to play.

Sophomore Tyree Young extended his double-digit scoring streak to seven games with 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting, his third game in the last five with ten or more made baskets to push his per game scoring average to 18.5. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native posted a statline of eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks. His Nicolet HS teammate and fellow second year guard Jezzriah Burton tallied 17 points, going 7-for-10 overall with a pair of triples. He also had eight boards, as the duo tied for the team lead in that category.

Freshmen reserves Sean Suchomel and Anthony Johnson scored 13 and 12 points, respectively. The tandem scored 19 of their 25 points in the first half and were a combined 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Suchomel, a Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native had a team-leading six assists, and is now averaging 4.7 assists per game.

Madison College shot better than 50% for the fourth consecutive game, converting 35-of-68 (51.5%) shots with five 3-pointers. The WolfPack defense forced the Spartans into a 26-for-71 (36.6%) effort that included 34 attempts from outside the arc. The heavy total of long range shots by the visitors also allowed the 'Pack to run up a 58-22 edge in points in the paint. Their ten turnovers is a season-best mark.
