MADISON, WISC. - Saturday afternoon's Madison College women's basketball game against Region IV foe Elgin Community College featured six ties, nine lead changes, and a biggest score differential of seven points. In the end, the #9 WolfPack pulled out a 52-47 win at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium to end a two-game losing streak.
Madison College opened the game making three of their first five shot attempts and grabbing a 7-0 lead, however, they would not make another field goal for nearly seven minutes, going 0-for-8 with four turnovers during that span. Despite that, the WolfPack owned a two-point lead entering the second quarter, which featured four ties and four lead changes before remaining a two-point home team advantage at the break.
The Spartans (5-2) built their biggest lead at 33-27 midway through the third quarter before the 'Pack put together a 9-2 run to close the quarter up one. Elgin quickly seized momentum to open the fourth with six straight points to make it 41-36 with eight-plus minutes to play. Madison College turned the game with some clutch three-point shooting. Sophomore
Megan Corcoran fourth triple of the game brought the WolfPack within a basket, and after a four-plus-minute scoring drought for both teams, fellow second year
Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven drained back-to-back three-pointers that gave the home team the lead for good at 47-43 in the last three minutes. The Fennimore, Wisconsin, native also knocked down a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds to clinch the win.
Megan Corcoran, a 5'10" guard/forward, scored a team-best 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting overall and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. It's Corcoran's fifth game of the season with multiple three-pointers. She also grabbed seven rebounds and three steals.
Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven was the only other player in double-figures with a season-high ten points in just her second game back from a season-ending injury after seven games last season. The 5'5" guard handled much of the ball-handling responsibilities, finishing 3-for-10 from the field and 2-for-5 outside the three-point line.Â
Freshman
Caitlyn Gilbertson nearly pulled of her third double-double, posting nine points and nine rebounds, as well as a team-leading three blocks. First year guard
Jessica Kosharek came off the bench and added eight points and a team-best three assists.
Madison College shot 34% (16-47) for the game, its second lowest percentage in a game this season, but still managed to earn its third consecutive win over the Spartans. The WolfPack are 4-1 all-time against Elgin.
