MADISON, WISC. - A tightly contested game between Region IV teams turned into a rout Saturday when the Madison College men's basketball team dismantled Elgin Community College by a 98-63 final. In the friendly confines of
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, the WolfPack steamrolled to season-high's for points in a half (63) and for a game (98) as three players scored 20 or more points against the Spartans, last year's national runners-up and the #2 team in the
NJCAA Division III Preseason Poll.
The trio of
Tyree Young,
Jezzriah Burton, and
Alex Easterday combined to score 70 of the team's 98 points, with each surpassing the 20-point plateau. Young, a sophomore point guard, posted 25 points, seven rebounds, and five steals, all game-high marks. He was 8-for-13 shooting with one three-pointer, and led the WolfPack with an 8-for-9 effort at the free throw line. It's Young's fourth game with 20 or more points on the season, and the third in the last four games. He finished with six assists, two back of a team-leading eight by
Nathaniel Buss.
Burton, also a sophomore guard, matched a career-best five 3-pointers as part of 24 points, another career-best. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native went 5-for-8 beyond the arc after missing his first two attempts and was 8-of-12 from the floor. Easterday, a freshman guard/forward that made five 3-pointers in the previous game, was just 2-for-6 from long distance, but 8-of-14 on the day to tie his career-high of 21 points set two days prior against Bryant & Stratton College.
Madison College led by four at halftime after scoring the last seven points of the half. Elgin (7-2) opened on an 8-0 run before the WolfPack responded with a 9-0 surge before the teams traded nine lead changes and three ties over the next ten minutes.
In the second half, Madison College caught fire, shooting 75% (21-28) overall and an impressive 8-of-10 from distance to pull away. Leading 42-41 more than three minutes in, the WolfPack used an Easterday triple to ignite a 21-2 burst. With the game already in hand, the 'Pack put the finishing touches on with an 11-0 stretch that closed out a season's-best three-game win streak.
The WolfPack owned a 25-13 edge in points off turnovers, a 9-2 advantage in second chance, and a 40-28 lead in points in the paint and total rebounds. They now own three games with double-digit three-pointers made, including two straight. An overall shooting percentage of 57.6% and a turnover total of 12 were both high-water marks for the season so far.
The win is Madison College's second all-time against the Spartans, snapping a four-game losing streak in the series.
