Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Narrow home loss to Columbus State drops WolfPack to .500

Young, Robinson combine for 51 of team's 71 points

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team held one of the nation's highest scoring teams in check on Saturday afternoon at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, but it was not enough in taking a 76-71 loss to Columbus State (OH) Community College. The first loss on the home floor this season saw sophomore Tyree Young and freshman Brandon Robinson combine to score 51 of the team's 71 points. The Cougars, who entered the game averaging 102.2 points per game, scored just enough to earn the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Neither offense was able to gain traction in the early going, as it was just 3-1 in favor of CSCC after the first six minutes. Down seven about halfway through the first half, Madison College went on a 21-4 run to lead by ten. The Cougars answered with an 11-0 surge to regain the lead before Young buried a three-pointer with 15 seconds to play that gave the 'Pack a 29-27 edge at halftime. Columbus State (6-1) controlled much of the second half and owned a 50-36 advantage with 11:25 remaining. The WolfPack did not surrender, scoring 11 of the game's next 13 points to trim the differential to five. And after CSCC again pushed the lead into double-digits in the final four minutes, Madison College still made it a one-possession game at 73-70 on Robinson's jumper with 20 seconds to play. The game closed with the visitors hitting 3-of-4 free throws, while the home team went 1-for-2 and committed a turnover.

The duo of Young and Robinson scored 27 and 24 points, respectively, with each making ten field goals and accounting for all of the WolfPack's made three-pointers. Young, an all-conference guard from last year, went 10-for-19 overall and 4-for-9 beyond the arc. Robinson, a forward from Minneapolis, Minnesota, converted 10-of-13 shots in his relentless pursuit of rim, and also knocked down two of his four 3-point attempts in consecutive possessions of the first half. Robinson secured seven rebounds in the losing effort.

Five other players scored for Madison College, none of which reached double-figures. Sean Suchomel and Jezzriah Burton combined to miss all ten of their shots, including seven from long range. Suchomel, a freshman guard, did lead the team with nine rebounds and five assists.

Madison College finished 26-for 64 (40.6%) on the day and really struggled outside the arc with a 6-for-26 (23.1%) performance. The Cougars weren't much better, comparatively, with percentages of 48.3 and 25.0, but did out-rebound the home team by a 44-33. The WolfPack was actually better in points off turnovers (19-14) and second chance points (10-4), but trailed 40-34 in interior scoring and 32-15 in bench points.
