Trapino, Gilbertson tally double-doubles as part of second win of season

DIXON, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team scored the first six points of Wednesday's game at Sauk Valley Community College and never looked back in a 56-47 road win, their second in the last three games. The #9 WolfPack won three of the four quarters against the NJCAA Division I Skyhawks, and saw two players record double-doubles as a result.

Madison College led by as much as eight in the opening ten minutes, doing so on two separate occasions. A Megan Corcoran jumper with 3:56 to play in the half pushed the advantage to double-digits for the first time before settling at 25-16 entering halftime. Sauk Valley (1-1) cut the differential to four early in the third quarter, but the 'Pack answered with an 8-0 run bookended by a pair of Peyton Trapino jump shots. The third ended with SVCC scoring nine of the final 11 points to trim the score to 35-30. At three different junctures of the fourth quarter the home team was within four points, but the WolfPack controlled the final three minutes by an 11-6 margin, including a 5-for-6 effort at the free throw line to close out the final minute of the game.

For the fifth straight game, sophomore Megan Corcoran was the leading scorer for Madison College with 16 points on 7-of-20 shooting. The 5'10" guard/forward missed all four of her long range shots, but was 2-for-2 on free throws and dished out a team-high five assists. The Madison La Follette product is averaging 23.0 points a game.

Two players, Peyton Trapino and Caitlyn Gilbertson, contributed double-doubles to the winning performance. Trapino, playing in her first game after rejoining the team following an impressive fall season with the Madison College women's soccer team, scored a season-high 14 points and matched a career-best with ten rebounds. The sophomore all-conference guard made 6-of-11 shots from the floor, chased down four offensive boards, dished off four assists, and picked up three steals. Gilbertson, a 5'10" forward, went 5-for-10 en route to 11 points, her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring game of the year. A career-high 14 rebounds, highlighted by 13 on the defensive glass, produced her second double-double in the last three games. She also had four assists , a block, and a steal.

Madison College missed all five of their shot attempts from beyond the three points arc, but made up for it with a 38-18 edge in points in the paint. The WolfPack shot 35.8% (24-67) overall and made 8-of-16 at the free throw line, while the Skyhawks were 16-of-64 (25%) from the floor, 7-for-25 (28%) from deep, and 8-of-17 (47.1%) at the stripe. The visitors also dominated the glass by a 58-43 margin. Offensively, the 'Pack registered assists on 18 of 24 made baskets.
