The 2017-18 soccer season was one for the record books for the Madison College women's team, and that now includes seven players who have received postseason recognition for their exceptional play. Freshmen
Britt Schumann and
Peyton Trapino were both named first team All-North Central Community College Conference and All-Region IV, while fellow first year
Annabelle Shere was first team all-region and second team all-conference. Sophomore
Brandie Gospodarek and freshman
Esther Noriega were each selected second team all-conference and all-region.
Abby Meehan received second team all-region accolades following her first season of collegiate soccer.
Britt Schumann, a native of DeForest, Wisconsin, broke the Madison College single-season and all-time scoring records in her first year with 25 goals, tying for seventh most in the nation. The 5'8" striker added six assists for 56 points to also set new benchmarks for single-season and all-time total points. Schumann put together nine multi-goal matches, including a stretch of five straight early in the season, en route to a 1.25 goals per game average.. She finished with six game-winning scores. Her 88 total shots and 61 shots on goal each rank ninth in the nation.
Peyton Trapino, also a DeForest, Wisconsin, native, tallied a dozen goals to finish tied for second on the team in that category. However, the part-time Madison College women's basketball point guard fully demonstrated her passing ability with a WolfPack single-season record 20 assists. That number leaves the 5'5" midfielder one assist shy of tying the career mark for helpers. Trapino was credited with two game-winning goals, including the only goal of a 1-0 win over Rock Valley College that opened the season and the
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Her five assists against Illinois Valley Community College on September 3 ties the program's single game record.
Annabelle Shere, a native of Monona, Wisconsin, proved to be one of the toughest defenders all season, and was a big reason why the WolfPack only surrendered 14 goals all season. Shere, who started 17 of her 18 matches played, helped hold opponents to an average of 7.1 shots on goal. Madison College ended the season with nine total shutouts. Despite not scoring a single goal or picking up one assists, Shere was credited 13 total shots and six shots on goal.
Brandie Gospodarek, a Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, native, was the only repeat all-conference and all-region recipient after earning first team accolades for both last season. The goalkeeper rewrote all of her program records from a season prior, allowing just 14 goals for a 0.74 goals against average during her 14-3-2 campaign. Her eight shutouts doubled her mark as a freshman as she also posted 87 saves and an .861 save percentage. Nationally, Gospodarek ranked seventh in goals against average, eighth in shutouts, and 12th in save percentage.
Esther Noriega, a native of New Glarus, Wisconsin, tied for second on the team with a dozen goals, to go along with six assists for a points total of 30. Her goals and points totals will place her in the top five for single-season marks in those categories. The midfielder tallied two game-winning goals and enjoyed three matches with two or more goals. Her four-goal effort against Milwaukee Area Technical College on September 13 ties her for third most in a game. Noriega was third in total shots with 65 and in shots on goal with 45.
Abby Meehan, an Evansville, Wisconsin, native, logged the most minutes of any position player with 1,494 and helped bolster the WolfPack defense. Like Shere, Meehan contributed mightily to the low opponent goals and shots numbers, as well as the nine team shutouts. The 5'9" defender did rack up five assists, 18 shots on goal, and 26 total shots.
Freshman winger
Erin True was named Region IV Tournament Most Valuable Player after the Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, native scored the lone goal in the Region IV Championship Game win over Joliet Junior College.
Peyton Trapino added NJCAA Division III All-Tournament Team honor to her list of accolades after scoring the only Madison College goal in two games at the national tournament.
