MADISON, WISC. & GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The biggest storyline from this past weekend for the Madison College women's soccer team is the addition of two more wins to their unbeaten record for the 2017 season, however, a slightly smaller story is the incredible contributions being made by a pair of former high school teammates from nearby DeForest, Wisconsin. The #4 WolfPack downed North Central Community College Conference foes Harper College, 3-1, and the College of DuPage, 5-0, on Friday and Sunday, respectively, to remain atop the league standings as they chase the program's first ever N4C championship. In the process, sophomore
Peyton Trapino and freshman
Britt Schumann accounted for all eight of the team's goals, and 19 of the 23 points for the 'Pack. Schumann's five-goal effort pushed her to the top of the program's single-season goals record with 16.
Match #1: #4 Madison College 3, Harper College 1
Madison College raced out to a 2-0 lead in the match's first eight minutes of play as they chased down the program's first ever regular season sweep of Harper College. Midfielder
Peyton Trapino registered her first of two scoring strikes in the 4' off an assist from sophomore
Breanne Kreklow. Less than four minutes later, it was Trapino on the passing end of a goal-scoring opportunity, setting up striker
Britt Schumann to make it 2-0. It would prove to be the game-winner.
That score held up through halftime before the Hawks (5-6, 4-5) solved the WolfPack defense to make it a one-goal game. Harper's lone goal occurred in the 49', however, the 'Pack had an answer. Trapino drilled her second goal of the game and fifth of the year in the 69' to extend the lead to 3-1.
The tightly contested match saw the homestanding Hawks attempt more shots overall (21-19), and shots on goal (16-13). WolfPack sophomore goalkeeper
Brandie Gospodarek finished with season-high 15 saves.
Madison College is now 4-3-1 all-time against Harper College.
Match #2: #4 Madison College 5, College of DuPage 0
To earn the program's first-ever win over the Chaparrals, Madison College received an epic effort from its freshman phenom.
Britt Schumann scored a career-high four goals, tying for third most goals in a single game in program history. In the process, the former DeForest Area HS athlete broke the single-season scoring record of 15, held by Elizabeth Conejo ('14) and
Lindsay Kraemer ('16), by running her total for the year to 16 goals. That also puts the striker three goals away from the four-year-old program's all-time scoring leader,
Arianna Viscarra ('16) with 19 goals. Schumann is also one point shy of Conejo's 35 for single-season points record.
Peyton Trapino, the other DeForest native, opened the scoring with goal in the 17', assisted by Schumann. Schumann went on to score the next four goals in the 21', 23', 64', and 70'. Freshman striker
Tierra Sackett recorded assists on the first two Schumann scoring tallies, and Trapino and
Esther Noriega added helpers on the final two, respectively.
Meanwhile, second year goalkeeper and Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, native
Brandie Gospodarek recorded four saves and her fourth shutout of the season, tying her program-record total from 2016. She faced just six total shots in the match, while the WolfPack fired 23 shots on goal and 31 attempts overall. The visitors also owned a 6-1 edge in corner kicks en route to ending a nine-match losing streak to DuPage (7-7-1, 4-4-1) that spans the entire length of their series history.
Sunday's match was a make-up date from a postponed contest on September 8.
Up Next:
