MADISON, WISC. - Sophomore
Rachel Slaney became the third player to score 1,000 points in a Madison College women's basketball uniform, and reached the milestone while leading the #3 WolfPack to a 107-83 win over Triton College on Saturday. The season-high point total marked the first time this season the 'Pack has surpassed the century mark, and the most points scored in a game since a 109-46 defeat of Wilbur Wright College in January 2015.
Madison College (16-4, 7-1) fell behind early as the Trojans scored the first six points of the game and went on to lead most of the first quarter, which ended with a 23-19 advantage for Triton College (9-14, 2-6). The momentum completely shifted in the second quarter thanks to a 17-0 run that put the WolfPack ahead by a 40-27 margin. Slaney scored 11 consecutive points during that run, which turned into a 12-point edge at the break.
The Trojans cut the deficit to five with 5:51 to play when the game took an ugly turn. Over the final 14 minutes, the Triton bench was assessed several technical fouls and game ejections, while four players racked up disqualifications with five fouls to leave the visitors with just three players on the court to finish the game.
When it was all said and done, Madison College shot 50% (37-73) from the floor and converted 29-of-24 free throw attempts. Both teams attacked the lane, with the WolfPack scoring a 58-44 advantage in points in the paint, as well as a 32-18 margin on second chance points. It all added up to the 15th win in 17 head-to-head meetings dating back to 1991, and a perfect 8-0 mark inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium against the Trojans.
Rachel Slaney finished with her 14th double-double of the season, tallying 34 points - 21 of which came in the second half - and a school-record 26 rebounds, half of which came on the offensive end. The rebound total is three better than the previous high of 23 set by Alyssa Schiele during the 2007-08 season. Slaney, a native of Barneveld, Wisconsin, registered her sixth game this season with at least 30 points, running her career total to 1,013 for third on the all-time list. She reached the 1,000-point mark with a third quarter free throw. The All-American is 62 points shy of the all-time mark of 1,075 set by Alicia Haag from 1988-1990. In addition to the points and rebounds, Slaney also had six assists, two blocks, and two steals. Her 10-of-14 performance at the free throw line mark the seventh time this year that she's reached double figures in makes and attempts.
Four others finished with double-digit point totals, led by freshman guard
Peyton Trapino's 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and dished out a team-best - and career-high - seven assists. Fellow first year
Megan Corcoran knocked down three of Madison College's four made 3-pointers in the game to reach 18 points.
