Slaney triple-double pushes WolfPack past Joilet

Historic effort guides Madison College to third straight win

MADISON, WISC. - Sophomore Rachel Slaney is putting together a season for the record books, earning her first career triple-double to lead the Madison College women's basketball team to a 95-87 win over Joliet Junior College at Redsten Gymnasium Saturday. The WolfPack led by as much as 16 before having to separate themselves late to secure their second straight to begin North Central Community College Conference play.

Slaney, an All-American last season, finished with 34 points, 14 rebounds, and ten assists for the first triple-double by a WolfPack player since Taylor Nelson accomplished the feat (21p/10r/11a) on January 10, 2015 against the College of DuPage. The Barneveld, Wisconsin, native converted 12-of-25 field goal tries with one made three-pointer and made nine of her 13 free throw attempts. It's her fifth game with over 30 points and her ninth double-double of the season, five of which have come consecutively. Slaney also gathered seven steals, finished three shy of securing the program's first quadruple-double in two years - a feat also accomplished by Nelson on January 7, 2015 with 21p/11r/10a/10s against Wilbur Wright College. For the season, Slaney is averaging 26.3 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 4.2 steals.

Madison College build a 14-point advantage at 27-13 early in the second quarter, only to see Joliet Junior College (10-7, 0-2) cut it to six at the break with a 41-35 differential. In the third quarter, freshman Megan Corcaran knocked down one of her three 3-pointers with 5:21 remaining to spark a 14-5 run, stretching the WolfPack lead to it's largest of the game at 66-50. Once again, the Wolves, who are receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division III Poll, clawed back to eventually tie the score at 80 with a little over three minutes to play.

As the clock tick inside of one minute remaining, Corcoran unleashed her biggest long distance make, pushing Madison College to a five-point edge at 89-94. The WolfPack iced the game away at the free throw line with four consecutive makes, part of perfect 8-for-8 stretch over the final 90 seconds. For the game, the home team shot 48% (37-77) overall and 17-for-23 at the charity stripe. JJC was successful on 41% (34-82) of their overall shots, including an impressive 11-for-25 effort beyond the arc. The 'Pack was plus 26 in points in the paint and plus 11 on the glass. The two teams combined for 49 turnovers as Madison College extended its winning streak over the Wolves to four straight, and now own a 16-9 lead in the all-time series.

Freshman guard Peyton Trapino set a new career-high with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting. The DeForest, Wisconsin, native also had seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. It's her ninth double-digit scoring effort of the year.

Backed by her three triples, Megan Corcoran reached 17 points and seven rebounds, while fellow first year Macy Graf pitched in with ten points to snap a run of four straight games with less than ten.

Madison College (12-3, 2-0) has a short turnaround as they'll step back out of conference play on Monday with a trip to play the University of Dubuque JV in Dubuque, Iowa. The WolfPack is 2-0 all-time against the Spartans, the latest win coming by nine last February. Game time is at 6:00 p.m.
