WolfPack women make it three straight with road win

Four score in double figures to defeat Dubuque JV by a dozen

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The Madison College women's basketball team took care of business Monday on the road, picking up a 77-65 victory over the University of Dubuque JV to push their current win streak to three games. It was their second game this season against a NCAA Division III JV squad based in the northwest Iowa town after dropping a two-point decision at home to the Loras College reserves back in December.

The WolfPack trailed by one (21-20) after the first quarter to the Spartans, but took advantage of 11 trips to the free throw line with eight makes to lead 35-32 at the break. In the third quarter Madison College stretched their advantage to nine, outscoring UD by a 23-17 margin, and maintained the lead throughout the final ten minutes.

Overall, the 'Pack shot 37% (27-72, slightly better than the Spartans at 35%. Beyond the three-point arc the home team knocked down 6-of-20 attempts compared to just 2-of-15 for Madison College, but the WolfPack were ten better in the free throws made (21-11) and attempted (27-17) columns. With their struggles from long range, Madison College did most of their offensive damage in the paint, scoring a 44-30 edge in interior scoring. Dubuque outrebounded the visitors 53-43, however, the Spartans turned the ball over 27 times, which turned into 21 WolfPack points.

Sophomore Rachel Slaney followed up her triple-double effort from Saturday with a sixth consecutive double-double, posting 29 points and 12 rebounds. The 5'10" forward was 10-for-24 in field goal attempts, missing all four tries from distance, and 9-of-13 at the charity stripe. Slaney also had five steals.

Freshman Macy Graf set a career-high with 13 points coming off the bench. Nearly half of the Jefferson, Wisconsin, native's points were the result of a 6-for-7 mark on free throws. Despite shooting 1-for-9 from three-point territory, fellow freshman Megan Corcoran matched Graf with 13 points, to go along with seven rebounds. The former Madison La Follette Lancer finished 4-for-17 overall en route to her tenth straight double-digit scoring effort. And another first year, guard Peyton Trapino, tallied 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting with a pair of free throws, while also leading the team with five assists and six steals.

The WolfPack (13-3, 2-0) continue a busy stretch of four games in eight days when in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College (12-5, 2-0) travels west down I-94 on Wednesday night. The Stormers and Madison College, along with Rock Valley College, are the only unbeaten teams left in the early stages of play in the North Central Community College Conference. After winning 62 of 64 games played from 1981 to 2014, the 'Pack have won just three of the last seven meetings with their oldest rivals, but do own a 70-10 lead in the all-time series. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m. inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, which will be hosting NESYB Night for the mid-week doubleheader.

The game will be broadcast live on MadisonCollege.TV or via the Madison College Athletics Facebook page.
