GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - Madison College women's volleyball pushed its unbeaten start to 8-0 with a sweep of Lincoln College (NJCAA DII) at the College of DuPage Invitational on Friday, setting a new program record for wins to open a season. That run ended in match number nine when the WolfPack fell in four sets to NJCAA Division I John A. Logan College, before finishing the tournament Saturday with wins over Ridgewater College and Oakton Community College (NJCAA DII).
Game #1: #1 Madison College 3, Lincoln College (IL) 0
The WolfPack opened with its fifth sweep in eight matches, taking down the Lynx by a score of 25-16, 25-13, and 25-18. Madison College cruised through the first set, converting its attacks at a .405 clip. Lincoln kept things close in the second, taking the 'Pack right down to the final point before Madison College pulled away again in the third. Overall,
Toby Parker's club finished with a .369 attack percentage and with 22 more kills than the opposition.
Sophomores
TeAnn Harms and
Andrea Bauer led the team in kills, both reaching double digits. Harms, a native of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, hit .480, while also pacing the team with two blocks. Bauer smashed 11 kills (.500) and chased down a team-leading 16 digs.
The WolfPack amassed 58 total digs, 14 more than the Lynx, as four players produced double figures in that category.
Kaitlin Mooney and
Megan Corcoran each had a baker's dozen, while
Keifer Zimmerman finished with ten. The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native also slipped three aces past the Lincoln receive.
Sophomore
Taylor Genthe ended the match with 30 assists, her first career match over the 30-assist plateau.
Game #2: John A. Logan College (IL) 3, Madison College 1
Through eight matches, Madison College had only lost three total sets, and never more than one in a single match. Going up against NJCAA Division I John A. Logan College, the WolfPack found themselves down 2-0 as the offense sputtered early in set losses by scores of 25-16 and 26-24. In those two sets, the 'Pack registered attack percentages of .138 and .083, respectively.
Madison College dug down deep in the third to secure a hard fought 25-22 win, thanks to an improved offense attack (.256). However, it would not hold as the Volunteers handed the WolfPack its first loss of the season with a 25-20 score in the fourth set.
Second year outside hitter
Andrea Bauer ended the match with 13 kills (.286) and 27 digs, both good for top honors on the team and a second consecutive double-double.
TeAnn Harms had 11 kills, while
Keifer Zimmerman and
Natasha Swiggum both hammered home six. For the match, the WolfPack hit .148.
Other statistical leaders included
Taylor Genthe with 36 assists, Harms with four blocks, and
Kaitlin Mooney with a pair of aces. Mooney and Zimmerman also collected 21 and ten digs, respectively.
Game #3: #1 Madison College 3, #5 Ridgewater College (MN) 0
Day two of the College of DuPage Invitational opened with a well contested four-set match between a pair of top five programs, and #1 Madison College came out on top with a 25-13, 21-25, 25-21, and 25-23 decision over #5 Ridgewater College.
The WolfPack set the tone in the first set behind a .333 attack percentage, but it was the back row of defense that carried them through the match. Madison College's 93 digs outdistanced the Warriors by 38.
Andrea Bauer (26) and
Kaitlin Mooney (22) did most of the dirty work; however,
Megan Corcoran (12),
Taylor Genthe (12), and
Keifer Zimmerman (10) all pitched in with double-digit efforts.
TeAnn Harms was the lone hitter in double-figures with 12 kills. Bauer, Zimmerman, and
Natasha Swiggum all finished with seven kills. Genthe dished out 33 assists, Bauer served up a season-high five aces, and Swiggum rejected three Ridgewater attacks.
Game #4: #1 Madison College 3, Oakton Community College (IL) 0
The tournament finale saw a return to normalcy and superiority with a 25-6, 25-7, and 25-17 route of Oakton Community College. With superb execution, the WolfPack took advantage of a porous Owls defense, hitting .386 for the match. The number included attack percentages of .550 in set one and .478 in set two.
Coach
Toby Parker was able to play 11 different players throughout the match, with seven earning at least one kill.
Andrea Bauer had 12 kills and Rock Valley College transfer Keifer Zimmerman finished with eight. Bauer also had ten digs, trailing only the 16 collected by
Kaitlin Mooney.Â
Also noteworthy were the 32 assists for
Taylor Genthe, as well as five aces by Zimmerman and four from Bauer.
Madison College (10-1, 1-0) will return not only return to North Central Community College Conference action on Tuesday, September 6, but they will also return to Glen Ellyn, Illinois. The WolfPack take on College of DuPage (3-7, 2-0), whom they have never lost a match against in 21 all-time meetings, including 12 as N4C foes. The match begins at 6:00 p.m.
