ROCKFORD, ILL. - You can add Wednesday night's trip to Rock Valley College as yet another close miss for a Madison College women's soccer team still searching for a season - and program - defining win. The WolfPack let an early lead slip away in the second half in a narrow 2-1 loss to #2 Rock Valley College. The Golden Eagles have now won all six meetings between the two programs that are both in their third year of existence.
The scoring strike came early for Madison College (6-5-0, 4-5-0) when terrific ball movement and key passes from
Breanne Kreklow and
Arianna Viscarra set up sophomore
Lindsay Kraemer. The Burlington, Wisconsin, native took advantage with a blast past the Golden Eagles 'keeper for a 1-0. It was just the second shot of the game - Kreklow misfired hire just two minutes prior - and Kraemer's eighth goal of the season made it 1-0 at the seven-minute mark of the game.
In the 13th minute, sophomore midfielder
Katie Travis was denied by the Rock Valley College (10-0-1, 8-0-1) goaltender. That would be the last of the match for the visitors.
As both goalies and defenses stiffened, the pressure mounted on WolfPack freshman
Brandie Gospodarek. The Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, native turned away five of the six shots on goal to keep the 'Pack ahead 1-0 at the half.
It was much the same in the second half, with Gospodarek saving three of the first five shots in her direction. Facing that intense of an assault, the first year netminder eventually allowed a goal in the 65th minute as the Golden Eagles netted the equalizer. Nine minutes and two more saves later, RVC scored the game winner.
Gospodarek finished with a dozen saves, her fifth double-digit saves effort of the season. She now boasts 110 total saves and an .887 save percentage.
Madison College will play their final regular season home match on Friday, September 30 before finishing the conference season with three successive road contests. Next up is Joliet Junior College (3-7, 1-5), whom the WolfPack will be seeking a season split with after a
2-1 loss in Illinois earlier this month. That loss was the first in six all-time meeting for Madison College in the head-to-head series with the Wolves. Kick off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Warner Park.
