MADISON, WISC. - There might not be a hotter goaltender in the country right now than sophomore
Juan Martinez, who with the help of an aggressive defense in front of him, shut out yet another North Central Community College Conference opponent Wednesday night at Warner Park. The Madison College men's soccer team defeated Rock Valley College by a 5-0 margin, marking the fifth match in the last seven played that Martinez has not surrendered a goal. The win also keeps the WolfPack atop the N4C standings, sitting percentage points better than #9 Triton College.
Martinez faced 14 total shots and was credited with seven saves as Madison College (8-1-2, 5-1-1) earned it's first regular season sweep of the Golden Eagles (5-5-1, 1-5-1). The Oaxaca, Mexico, native and Verona Area (WI) HS grad has not allowed a goal in his last 343 minutes between the pipes, lowering his goals against average to 1.01 and raising his save percentage to .814.
For any goaltender, it certainly helps when you are consistently playing with a lead, as was the case against RVC. The WolfPack tallied a goal in the game's first ten minutes when sophomore defenseman
Ryan Henry tallied his second score of the season, this one off an assist by
Jose Barron.
Former Madison College men's basketball player
Toby Andrews made it 2-0 in the 17th minute, converting a pass from his brother Jake, who also flipped from dribbling with his hands to his feet. The duo lead the WolfPack in points this season with 27 and 23, respectively.
The 36th minute saw both of the Andrews matriculate the ball towards freshman
Ricardo Ramos, whose second goal of the season pushed the home team lead to 3-0 at the half.
The scoring continued in the second half with
Bachirou Lo scoring off a another
Jose Barron assist in the 70th minute, and
Toby Andrews netting his team-leading 11th goal of the season with Lo setting him up. On the year, Madison College owns a 47-11 scoring advantage over it's opponents, including a plus-22 margin in second half scoring.
After a night off the WolfPack will return to the pitch on Friday with a trip to Joliet Junior College (3-8-1, 3-3-1). Madison College has won two of the last three meetings, having lost or tied the previous dozen against the Wolves. The 'Pack came out on top
4-0 earlier this month in Madison. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Joliet, Illinois.
