JOLIET, ILL. - The run the Madison College men's soccer team's defense is currently on is unprecedented in school history. The WolfPack earned their fourth consecutive shutout on Friday, defeating Joliet Junior College 4-0 to sweep the season series with the Wolves. The zero on the scoreboard also means sophomore goaltender
Juan Martinez has not allowed a scoring tally in 433 consecutive minutes, also a school record.
Martinez, who returned to play goalie for Madison College after first doing so in 2013 when he earned all-conference accolades, denied all six shots on goal by Joliet JC (3-9-1, 3-4-1). In the four-game run of perfection, the Verona Area (WI) HS product has only 20 saves, and indication of how well the veteran line of defense is playing.
"Our defense has remained focus on their effort and communication, and that has seen them produce some great results," boasts head coach
Cory Sims. "Everyone is looking out for their teammate next to them, and when that sort of collective work takes place, good things tend to happen. Everyone remains committed to improving with each week of training sessions and games."
On the offensive end, Madison College (8-1-2, 6-1-1) scored all four of its goals in the first half, beginning with a
Jake Andrews goal off a
Jose Barron pass in the tenth minute. The goals is Andrews eighth of the season.
Barron made it 2-0 in the 21st minute on a conversion of a
Christian Munoz pass, giving the the freshman from Beloit, Wisconsin, five scoring tallies on the year.
The WolfPack padded their lead in the 24th minute when sophomore
Ryan Henry scored for the second straight game and capped the offensive output on a Munoz goal just minute before the half ended. Barron and
Toby Andrews were credited with an assist on the Henry and Munoz goals, respectively.
Madison College proved to be extremely efficient, netting their four goals on 11 total kicks while the Wolves (3-9-1, 3-4-1) also hoisted 11 shots, but came away empty. The offensive surge also led to a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks for the 'Pack.
A major challenge awaits Madison College when it returns home on Wednesday, September 5 to host #9 Triton College (9-2, 6-2) at Warner Park. The WolfPack currently sits percentage points ahead of the Trojans in the North Central Community College Conference standings with two matches remaining, and is seeking a third straight season split after losing 2-0 in River Grove, Illinois, on September 14. The Trojans own a 5-15 edge in the all-time series, including a seven wins in 11 matches played in Madison. Kick off is set for 4 p.m.
