N4C CHAMPS: Madison College claims share of first title in eight years

Upset of #8 Triton brings 11th title overall, 1st in N4C

MADISON, WISC. - With their 3-2 upset win over #8 Triton College on Wednesday at Warner Park, the Madison College men's soccer team has claimed at least a share of its first North Central Community College Conference championship. Prior to joining the N4C in 2009, the WolfPack had won ten titles in 11 years between 1998 and 2008, including four straight from 2005-2008, in the old Wisconsin Technical College Conference. The league crown is also the first under fourth year head coach Cory Sims.

The match was scoreless for most of the first half before Madison College (10-1-2, 7-1-1) snuck in a pair of goals before whistle. Toby Andrews broke the 0-0 tie with his 12th goal of the season in the 40th minute. Then in extra time, Bachirou Lo took a Jose Barron pass and scored to make it 2-0 WolfPack at the break.

The lead would not hold up as the Trojans (11-3-0, 6-3-0) tallied two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half against WolfPack goaltender Juan Martinez. The goals snapped a four-game shutout streak and the ended a impressive run of 482 consecutive scoreless minutes between the pipes.

Looking for an answer, Madison College found one just five minutes after the game was tied. Sophomore midfielder James Pretto used a Sam LaMarche assist to net the game-winning goal in the 59th minute. It's Pretto's second goal of the season and the first game-winner of his collegiate career.

From there the defense did its part to keep Triton College off the scoreboard, securing the WolfPack's seventh win in 21 all-time meetings and third straight season split.

Madison College will wrap up N4C play Friday, October 7 with their regular season home finale against in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College (1-10, 0-8). A WolfPack win would mean an outright league championship, while a loss could allow Harper College to earn a share of the title for a second straight year. Madison College owns a 33-12 advantage in the series with the Stormers, including win in the last seven matches by a combined score of 39-1. Kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. at Warner Park.
