PALATINE & ELGIN, ILL. - The Madison College men's soccer hit the road twice over the weekend for matches in the state of Illinois and came away with a win and a draw. On Friday, the WolfPack played through two overtimes before settling for a scoreless draw at Harper College. They followed it up Sunday with a resounding 9-0 dismantling of Elgin Community College.
Game #1: Madison College 0, Harper College 0 (2OT)
Offense came at a premium in the second meeting between the WolfPack and the Hawks, as did opportunities to catch your breath. The two teams played a 110 minutes with neither surrending a goal.
Madison College goaltender
Juan Martinez made six saves en route to his third shutout of the season. His counterpart from Harper (6-2-1, 4-2-1)Â was credited with three saves as the Hawks put more shots on goal (6-3), while the 'Pack attempted more shots overall (15-12).
Sophomore
Christian Munoz had the best looks at the net, attempted three shots and putting one on goal.
Jake Andrews finished with six shots, but zero on goal. His brother
Toby Andrews was credited with one shot on goal, as was fellow first year
Bachirou Lo.
Madison College had defeated Harper, 3-2, on August 31, which remains its only win against the Hawks in the last five meetings. Friday's tie also marks the first draw in the all-time series and helped propel the WolfPack into first place in the North Central Community College Conference standings with a 4-1-1 record, sitting just ahead of Triton College (5-2) and Harper.
Game #2: Madison College 9, Elgin Community College 0
The WolfPack let out its collective offensive frustration Sunday at Elgin Community College (3-5-0), scoring nine goals in a lopsided affair. The match remained close through the first half, with Madison College owning a slip 2-0 advantage.
Freshman
Jose Barron tallied the first goal with the Beloit, Wisconsin, native scoring in the 28th minute. Just before the half, fellow first year
Zach Blair converted his only shot on goal to make it a two-goal lead in the 43rd minute. It's the first career goal for the McFarland (WI) HS product.
When play resumed in the second half, the match swung entire in favor of the visiting WolfPack, who would score seven goals in just over 30 minutes of a game action.
Toby Andrews kicked in the first on an assist from his brother Jake, giving Toby a team-leading nine goals on the season.
Not to be outdone,
Christian Munoz found the back of the net in the 60th and 65th minutes, pushing the lead to 5-0. The goals came off assists from
Toby Andrews and
Ricardo Ramos, respectively. The pair of scores also pushed Munoz to nine total goals on the season.
Now playing with a comfortable lead,
Bachirou Lo was able to sandwich a pair of goals around the season's first for defenseman and captain
Bobby Beaudet. Sophomore midfielder
James Pretto capped the scoring in the 88th minute, marking his first score of the season, as well.
Playing mostly on their half of midfield, the WolfPack attempted 20 more shots on goal (20-1) than the Spartans, making for a relative easy afternoon for WolfPack goalies.
Juan Martinez registered one save in his near 80 minutes of game time before giving way to freshman
Blake Dehn for the final ten. Dehn did not face a single shot.
Madison College (7-1-2, 4-1-1) will play three of its final five game at home, starting Wednesday, September 28 against Rock Valley College. In the short history between the two programs, the WolfPack own a 3-2-1 advantage, including a
5-2 win in Rockford, Illinois, on September 2. Kick off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Warner Park.
