RIVER GROVE, ILL. - The best start in nearly a decade came to an end Wednesday night for the Madison College men's soccer team, taking a 2-0 loss at #9 Triton College for their first loss of the season. The six game unbeaten streak to start the year was the best since the 2007 team went 15-0-1 before suffering a loss. This year's WolfPack season now ranks as the fourth best start in school history.
The match was tied through the first half of play, though Madison College (5-1-1, 4-1-0) outshot the Trojans by a 7-3 margin. Just over a minute into the second half, Triton (7-1, 4-1) left wing Vitalli Kvas snuck a shot past WolfPack goaltender
Juan Martinez to break the tie. Kvas added an insurance goal in the 60th minute to make it 2-0. Despite the two goals, Martinez also came up with three saves.
Madison College continued to get looks at the net throughout the match, but simply could not convert. The 'Pack finished with 16 shots, seven of which were on goal. Sophomore
Christian Munoz and first year
Jake Andrews each had two shots on goal, while
Jose Barron,
Bobby Beaudet, and
Toby Andrews all applied one shot. The Trojans goalkeeper tallied five saves overall to hand the WolfPack a loss in North Central Community College Conference play.
Next up is a non-conference match against Illinois Valley Community College (2-5) on Tuesday, September 20. Madison College defeated the Eagles,
8-3, to start the season on August 23. That was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Kick off is at 3:00 p.m. at historic
Breese Stevens Field in downtown Madison.
