WolfPack hold on late for first conference win

Undefeated season remains in tact despite location change, delay

MADISON, WISC. - Arriving at Warner Park only to find a wet surface from Tuesday's heavy rains, the Madison College men's soccer team shifted Wednesday's game back 45 minutes and five miles southeast to Hiestand Park on Madison's east side. When it was finally time to take the pitch, the WolfPack outlasted the visiting Harper Hawks by a 3-2 final, earning their first North Central Community College Conference win of the season and keeping their unbeaten start to the season alive.

Freshman midfielder/forward Ricardo Ramos tallied the game's first goal off an assist from fellow first year Zach Blair nearly 20 minutes into the game.

Madison College (2-0-1, 1-0) made it a two-goal advantage in the 27th minute on Toby Andrews team-leading third goal of the season. Beloit Memorial (WI) product Jose Barron assisted on the play.

Unfortunately, the Hawks cut the deficit to one before the half, beating goaltender Juan Martinez to make it 2-1.

The WolfPack re-established their largest lead just nine minutes into the second half. Carlos Martinez set up Christian Munoz for his third goal of the year and the team's third of the game.

No playing against the Hawks and the clock, Madison College was unable to hold it's 3-1 lead, allowing one last Harper College (1-2, 0-1) goal in the 69th minute. That alone would not be enough for the visitors, giving the WolfPack a three-game unbeaten streak to start the season for the first time since 2013. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak against Harper.

Martinez came through with six saves in goal, while both teams put 15 shots on the board.

Madison College continues N4C play on Friday with a showdown with Rock Valley College (2-1, 0-1) in Rockford, Illinois. The two teams split a pair of meetings last year. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
