WolfPack win Battle for the Dells title, stay unbeaten

Four wins for #1 Madison College highlighted by four-settter against #2 Rochester CTC

WISCONSIN DELLS, WISC. - Facing a challenging field of opponents in the season's first tournament, the #1 Madison College women's volleyball team improved to 6-0 on the season and claimed the Battle for the Dells tournament title over the weekend at JustAGame Fieldhouse. The WolfPack opened with a 3-0 sweep of Lake Michigan College (NJCAA DII), before rattling off four-set victories over Iowa Central Community College and Muskegon Community College, all three of which are NJCAA Division II programs. To cap the action, coach Toby Parker and company proved they are deserving of the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division III poll with a 3-1 defeat of #1 and defending national champion Rochester Community & Technical College.

Match #1: #1 Madison College 3, Lake Michigan College (MI) 0

The WolfPack jumped out early on the Red Hawks, dominating the first set, 25-8. Set two played much closer with Madison College earning a 25-20 win before sealing the sweep with a 25-11 decision in the final set.

The 'Pack combined to hit .372 for the match, while holding the opposition to a -.075 attack percentage. In the end, the nation's top-ranked team had twice as many kills by a 36-18 margin.

Two players reached double digit kills, TeAnn Harms with 11 and Taylor Genthe with ten. Genthe, a sophomore from Spring Green, Wisconsin, also led the team with 4.0 blocks. Andrea Bauer notched 13 digs to finish just ahead of Kaitlin Mooney (12) and Keely Brown (10). Brown earned her first career double-double, picking up 25 assists.

The sweep increases the WolfPack's set win streak to nine straight to start the season.

Match #2: #1 Madison College 3, Iowa Central Community College (IA) 1

After an impressive 25-15 victory in the opening set, Madison College would drop the second set by a 26-24 final to the Tritons and see their 10-set win streak come to a close. However, the WolfPack responded with set wins of 25-18 and 25-16 to push their match win streak to four.

The 'Pack's back row put together an outstanding effort defensively, tracking down dig after dig as five players reached double figures. Sophomore Kaitlin Mooney had 18 digs, followed by Keifer Zimmerman (15), Andrea Bauer (14), Keely Brown (14), and Taylor Genthe (12).

Bauer was successful on a team-best 13 kills, with TeAnn Harms and Taylor Genthe right behind at 11 and nine, respectively. For the match, Madison College hit .288.

Joining Bauer in the double-double category was Brown, who dished out 36 assists.

The loss by the Tritons is their first of the season.

Match #1: #1 Madison College 3, Muskegon Community College (MI) 1

Facing a fellow unbeaten team for the second straight match, Madison College again needed four sets to keep their own unblemished record intact. The WolfPack stormed out to a 25-16 win, and after a narrow 26-24 heartbreaker in set two, rallied to win the final two sets 25-17 and 25-23.

Statistically, the match was extremely close as the 'Pack needed everyone of their 45 kills to secure the win, while also taking advantage of 26 Jayhawks hitting errors.

Reedsburg, Wisconsin, native and sophomore TeAnn Harms was the lone Madison College player in double-figure kills, finishing with 15 on 26 attempts for an impressive .538 percentage.

Freshman Keely Brown had 37 assists to go along with ten digs. Libero Kaitlin Mooney dug up 28 balls for team-high honors. Andrea Bauer's statline included 14 digs and four service aces, while first year middle blocker Natasha Swiggum was part of four blocks.

Match #1: #1 Madison College 3, #2 Rochester Community & Technical College (MN) 1

To cap the perfect weekend, all eyes were on a matchup of the NJCAA's top two teams in the Division III poll, and the WolfPack showed why their spot in the rankings is higher than the defending champs. In a back-and-forth match, Madison College took set one 25-21, but the Yellowjackets came right back to steal set two 26-24. The pivotal third set went right down to the wire, with the 'Pack eeking out a 25-23 win and carrying that momentum forward for a 25-22 match-clinching victory.

The Madison College back row again proved crucial, amassing an astounding 112 digs to just 47 for Rochester. Sophomore libero Kaitlin Mooney found 30 of them, while Andrea Bauer (24), Keifer Zimmerman (20), and Taylor Genthe (15) scrambled to got a majority of the rest.

For Zimmerman, the match represented her first double-double effort after transferring from Rock Valley College. The 5'9" utility player ripped a season-high 13 kills, trailing only the hot-hitting TeAnn Harms. Swinging at a .378 clip, Harms tallied 17 kills to go along with a pair of service aces and five blocks, all tops on the team.

Setter Keely Brown collected 33 assists, though Genthe pitched in with a dozen.

The victory pushed Madison College to a 6-0 start and dropped Rochester to 1-3.

The WolfPack will open North Central Community College Conference action on Thursday with a road game against #9 Rock Valley College. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m.
