OGLESBY, ILL. - The Madison College men's soccer team kicked off the 2016 season with a bang Tuesday, dominating Illinois Valley Community College, 8-3. Now playing soccer after two years of basketball, twin brothers
Jake Andrews and
Toby Andrews combined for half of the team's goals as the WolfPack won their season opener for the first time since 2013.
It didn't take long for the Andrews brothers and Madison College to seize control of the match as
Jose Barron set up Toby on the season's first goal just three minutes into the match. Four minutes later Jake converted a
Ricardo Ramos pass for the first goal of his career and the WolfPack owned an early 2-0 advantage.
IVCC (0-1) dented the scoreboard at the 30' mark against 'Pack goalkeeper
Juan Martinez, who returned as the Madison College netminder after a two year hiatus.
Jake Andrews then then beat his brother to reach two goals on the season, doing so in the 40th minute. After Illinois Valley answered to make it 3-2 less than three minutes later, Toby tallied the family's fourth total goal with a ball to the back of the net in the 50th minute.
The rest of the second half belonged to Madison College. Barron, a first year player from Beloit, Wisconsin, scored goals one and two of his collegiate career, the second of which was assisted by
Jake Andrews, giving the UK native five total points.
Bachirou Lo, a first year from Senegal, and
Christian Munoz helped cap the scoring with second half goals. For Munoz, it's his 11th career goal after finishing second on the team with ten last fall.
Martinez, a graduate of Verona Area (WI) HS, faced nine total shots, surrendering three goals and being credited with one save. The WolfPack sent 24 shots in all, with 16 on goal.
Madison College (1-0) continues play Saturday, August 27 with the home opener against Waubonsee Community College. Kick off at Warner Park Field #1 is set for 12:00 p.m.
