MADISON, WISC. - Playing on Robin Roberts Field for the final time in the 2016 regular season, the Madison College baseball team split their doubleheader with South Suburban College on Saturday. The Bulldogs came from behind to win the opener 6-4, but the WolfPack responded with a 12-5 drubbing of the visitors in the nightcap.
Game #1: South Suburban College 6, Madison College 4
Madison College brought the big bats out early to start the weekend twin bill. Redshirt sophomore
Ryan Makuski began the game by reaching first on an error, followed by a steal of second base. Freshman
Bryce Plate capitalized with a run-scoring single to left. Then fellow first year
Kian O'Brien bashed his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left that made it 3-0. The Madison La Follette (WI) HS product has hit two homers in the last five games.
The Bulldogs clawed back with one run in the second and two more in the third to even the game against Madison College starter
Sam Lund. The redshirt freshman then surrendered two more runs in the fifth one three hits, including a double and a triple.
The 'Pack put one run back on the board when sophomore
Trevor Tunison, playing in just his sixth game since the end of March due to a leg injury, went yard to left field to lead off the bottom of the fifth. It's the second home run of the season and of his career.
Lefthanded reliever
Alec Haluzak took over on the hill in the seventh to try and keep it a one-run game, however, SSC tacked on an insurance run to make it 6-4. Madison College then went 1-2-3 in the bottom half to end the game.
Sam Lund (4-4) had a three-game win streak snapped after allowing four earned runs and six hits in six innings of work. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native also struck out five batters and walked two.
Six different WolfPack batters registered a hit in the game.
Kian O'Brien had a team-high two RBI.
Game #2: Madison College 12, South Suburban College 5
A pair of high-scoring innings propelled Madison College to a relatively easy win in game two of the doubleheader. And it began with a five-run first.
Thanks to five hits and two Bulldog errors, the WolfPack put six runs on the board in their first at bats. Up 1-0,
Ronnie Cross bunted in
Bryce Plate and
Ryan Makuski singled home
Nate Schmidt to make it 3-0. The lead jumped to 6-0 when an SSC pitch jumped off the bat of freshman
Chris Lund and over the left field wall, scoring three more runs. For Lund, a Stoughton (WI) HS product, it's his second home run of the season and first since March 17.
The Bulldogs drew within four in the second, plating two runs against
Dominick Golubiewski, who was making his first start of the season. The advantage dropped to 6-3 in the third when South Suburban College (21-29-1) scored on a sacrifice fly by the first batter that
Jared Horton faced in relief of Golubiewski.
But the run came right back when freshman
Zach Bailey drove in Makuski with a single to left field in the home half of the third inning.
Owning a 7-5 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, Madison College (25-23-1) exploded for five runs to put the game out of reach.
Chris Lund continued his productive game with a two-RBI single to center to begin the scoring. Bailey then brought Lund in with his second run-producing base hit, this one a double to left for a 10-5 edge. The scoring was capped when the Bulldogs shortstop misplayed a ground ball off the bat of
Drew Steinmetz, allowing Bailey and
Tanner Van De Hey to reach home.
Chris Lund finished the game going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five batted in, one shy of matching his season high.
Zach Bailey and
Nate Schmidt also enjoyed a two-hit game. Bailey and
Drew Steinmetz each had two RBI, while Schmidt, Cross, and Makuski joined Lund on the list of players scoring twice.
