KANKAKEE, ILL. - Hoping to end the regular season on a high note and ride some momentum into the NJCAA Region IV Division II Tournament, the Madison College baseball team found themselves on the losing end of two heartbreaking setbacks Sunday against Kankakee Community College. The WolfPack lost the opener 6-5 on a walk-off wild pitch, then went to extra innings before dropping a 4-3 game in the nightcap.
Game #1: Kankakee Community College 6, Madison College 5
A day full of tightly contested baseball began with a back-and-forth affair in game one. Madison College struck first in the second, courtesy of the first home run of the season by sophomore
Simon Maurice. The second baseman from Oregon, Wisconsin, pulled a pitch beyond the right field wall for a two-run homer.
The Cavaliers scored in the home half to make it 2-1, which it remained until the bottom of the fourth. KCC took their first lead of the day with two more runs off starter
Brandon Parr.
The WolfPack answered in the fifth, plating one run to tie the game at three. Maurice again crossed home when
Ryan Makuski grounded out to short with runners at second and first. Madison College nearly added a run prior to that, but
Chris Lund was thrown out at home as he tried to score on
Tanner Van De Hey's bunt back to the pitcher.
In the sixth, designated hitter
Ronnie Cross came up with two runners on after
Nate Schmidt doubled and
Carson Carmody singled in the two prior at bats. Cross laced a triple to center, sending the score to a 5-3 edge for the 'Pack.
Lefthander
Clayton Uselman took over for Parr after three batters in the sixth, entering the game with one out and runners at first and second. The sophomore from Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, induced a pop up to his first batter before allowing successive RBI singles to center to tie the game, 5-5.
Madison College was unable to score in the seventh despite having two runners aboard, and Uselman found trouble in the bottom half. A one-out double put the winning run on base, then a wild pitch and a walk left runners at the corners. Uselman then tossed his second wild pitch of the inning, allowing the winning run to score as the ball got by catcher
Trevor Tunison, who entered the game as a defensive substitution that inning.
Clayton Uselman (1-4) took the loss in one inning work, allowing one earned run on three hits.
Brandon Parr tossed 5 1/3 innings of three hit baseball, giving up four earned runs and striking out five batters.
Carson Carmody and
Simon Maurice each had two hits to lead the WolfPack offense. Maurice had two RBI and two runs scored, while Carmody scored two runs and
Ronnie Cross drove in a pair to match for team-high honors.
Game #1: Kankakee Community College 4, Madison College 3 (8 innings)
Game two of the day played as a direct continuation of the opener.
Both teams scored two runs in the second inning. It began with three straight singles for Madison College, and despite a caught stealing of
Nate Schmidt, the bases were loaded when
Simon Maurice drew a walk. Sophomore
Trevor Tunison then ripped a single to right to score
Carson Carmody and
Ronnie Cross.
Kankakee Community College (35-18) matched it in their half, plating two runs against righthanded starter
Derek Heffel. Heffel allowed a lead off walk that eventually scored on a double. His second wild pitch of the game brought in the last run to make it 2-2.
Yet another Heffel wild pitch in the third gave the Cavaliers a 3-2 advantage, which remained until the fifth inning.
The WolfPack capitalized on a lead off walk to Maurice and an error on the infield to put runners at the corners with one down. Third baseman
Drew Steinmetz drove a sacrifice fly into the outfield, deep enough to score Maurice and tie the game.
Neither team would score for the remainder of the seven-inning regulation, so the game pushed forward into the eighth.
In the top half, Steinmetz opened with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, however, back-to-back fly outs to centerfield by
Nate Schmidt and Carmody prevented the 'Pack from taking the lead.
Jake Kopp, the fourth pitcher used by
Mike Davenport in the game, stayed in to work the eighth after closing out the last two outs of the seventh. Kopp allowed a lead off single to right, and then found himself working with runners at the corners and one out following a walk and a passed ball. The KCC designated hitter came up and single to right, scoring the winning run for a second walk-off win of the day.
Kopp (2-4) took the loss, his second in three appearances, allowing an unearned run on two hits. Heffel went four innings and surrendered three runs - two of which were earned - on four hits. He also struck out four, walked three, and threw three wild pitches.
Hank Schau worked two scoreless frames and
Peyton Durst was scoreless for 1/3 of an inning.
Of the WolfPack's five hits,
Carson Carmody had two of them. The Barneveld, Wisconsin, native was one of three players to score a run.
Trevor Tunison paced the offense with two RBI.
Madison College ends the 2016 regular season with a 25-25-1 record to go along with a 15-8-1 mark and a third place finish in the North Central Community College Conference. The WolfPack have lost five of their last six games heading into the postseason. They will learn their NJCAA Region IV Division II assignment on Monday.
