MADISON, WISC. - Saturday's doubleheader between two of the top teams in the North Central Community College Conference turned into a ol' fashioned shootout, Madison College and Triton College combining to score 45 runs over 14 innings in a split of two games at Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack rallied with a six-run seventh inning to steal game one by a 16-15 final, then succumbed to the Trojans in the nightcap 9-5. In four games between the two teams this season, the 'Pack is averaging 10.0 runs a game, while allowing 7.3 runs.
Game #1: Madison College 16, Triton College 15
The two teams traded blows throughout the opening game, culminating in a final inning resembling that of a fireworks show finale.
With Madison College leading 10-6 after five innings, the Trojans rallied to even the score in the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits against relief pitcher
Dominick Golubiewski. The redshirt sophomore remained in the game for the seventh, but again found himself in trouble. After hitting each of the first two batters, the lanky righthander allowed five runs on four hits as Triton took a 15-10 lead.
All that said, Golubiewski (1-0) would earn his first win as his WolfPack teammate picked him up with a six run rally to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Five batters came up before the Trojans made a pitching change and recorded the first out of the inning. During that span, singles by
Simon Maurice,
Chris Lund,
Kian O'Brien, and
Bryce Plate, plus a walk drawn by
Nick Kanavas, scored four runs and brought the 'Pack to within 15-14.
Pinch-hitter
Alex Mayer stepped up and ripped a double to left field, scoring Plate from second to tie the game at 15. What followed was a single, a ground out, and an intentional walk to load the bases with two out and bring Kanavas back to the dish with the game on the line. The sophomore from Brookfield (WI) East HS delivered with his second base on balls of the inning, this one forcing in the game's winning run for the walk off win.
The scoring started in the second when Triton tallied four runs and Madison College answered with seven of their own, coming off one hit, five walks, and three errors. The crooked numbers kept coming in the third with the Trojans putting up two runs to climb within 7-6, before the WolfPack took advantage of three more visitor errors and two hits to plate three additional runs for a 10-6 edge.
Simon Maurice and
Bryce Plate each had three hits, part of 11 total for the 'Pack. Even more impressive - pending the perspective - were the dozen walks taken by Madison College batter, led by four issued to Kanavas. He, along with Maurice, both scored a team-high three runs, and Plate drove in a team-best four runs.
Golubiewski's win came despite allowing nine runs - eight earned - on seven hits in his two innings. Starter
Derek Heffel worked five innings and surrendered five earned runs on six hits with four walks and two K's.
In seven innings, the Trojans and WolfPack combined for 31 runs, 24 hits, 17 walks, and eight errors.
Game #2: Triton College 9, Madison College 5
Game two proved to be a much cleaner affair, though Madison College was unable to provide enough runs.
After the visitors worked three runs on three hits against starter
Hank Schau in the second inning, the homestanding WolfPack was ready to regain the lead with four runs in the bottom half.
Kian O'Brien kick started the attack with his first career triple and scored on a
Bryce Plate single. Two subsequent walks loaded the bases before a wild pitch moved everyone up 90 feet, including another run. With two outs,
Nick Kanavas hit a two-RBI single to right, bringing home
Drew Steinmetz and
Ronnie Cross for a 4-3 lead.
Conference front-runner Triton College (21-10, 10-2) then controlled the rest of the game, regaining the edge with a two-run home run in the fourth off Schau. The freshman from Park Ridge, Illinois, continued to struggle in the fifth, allowing a lead off homer, and sandwiching two hit batters around a double before being pulled. He remained on the hook as the Trojans scored runs number seven, eight, and nine in the fifth.
Hank Schau (1-1) finished the game with four innings of seven hit baseball allowing eight earned runs with six free passes to first (three walks, three HBP).
Peyton Durst tossed the final three innings, holding the Trojans to one hit and striking out two.
Nick Kanavas and
Nate Schmidt combined for half of the WolfPack's four hits. Kanavas also drove in a team-best two runs.
Madison College (16-15, 10-4) remains home for another N4C doubleheader Sunday against College of DuPage (26-6-1, 10-3). Due to prior complications with weather, the WolfPack and Chaparrals will play four games over the next two days in making up a previous doubleheader that was postponed three times. First pitch at Robin Roberts Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
