WolfPack split another N4C twin bill, win nightcap vs. DuPage

Same teams will play DH in Glen Ellyn on Monday

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team wrapped up a six-game home stand with a third consecutive doubleheader split, this time taking one of two games with North Central Community College Conference foe College of DuPage. The Chaparrals picked up a 10-6 win in the first game, but the WolfPack recovered for a 5-1 victory in the finale at Robin Roberts Field on Sunday.

Game #1: College of DuPage 10, Madison College 6

Seeking a fifth win in seven games, Madison College found itself in an early hole against visiting DuPage. The Chaparrals tallied two runs in the first half inning against starter Clayton Uselman, taking advantage of a lead off walk, a double, and an error by first baseman Carson Carmody.

The WolfPack earned on back in the home half of the frame when Nate Schmidt singled to drive in Ryan Makuski.

it remained 2-1 until the fifth inning. DuPage sandwiched two singles around a triple to center for a 4-1 advantage. Then in the sixth the visitors added six more runs on four hits and two walks. The highlight to the inning for the Chaparrals were back-to-back home runs to centerfield. The first was a three-run shot and both came against reliever Riley Pawelski. The freshman transfer, who came in for Uselman one batter prior to the first home run, was on the hook for three of the six runs scored that inning.

Down 10-1, the WolfPack tried to make the game interesting, scoring three runs in sixth and two in the seventh. Chris Lund, Kian O'Brien, and Carson Carmody all recorded RBI's in the sixth inning.

O'Brien was the lone batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Lund had a team-best two runs batted in, and Makuski scored a team-leading two runs.

Clayton Uselman (1-2) took his second loss in his last two starts since he earned his first win March 29 at Triton College. The lefthander worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Pawelski finished with three runs given up on three hits and a K in his one-plus inning.

Game #2: Madison College 5, College of DuPage 1

Motivated to not be swept on their home field, Madison College (17-16, 11-5) jumped out early in game two against the Chaparrals, scoring four runs in the first inning. The offensive burst occurred with two outs and was triggered by back-to-back singles from Kian O'Brien and Nick Kanavas. A balk brought in the first run before Carson Carmody singled in the second. A wild pitch then allowed Bryce Plate to hustle in all the way from second before Ronnie Cross plated the final tally with a single to right that scored Carmody.

Carmody picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the third that allowed Kanavas to tag up and score for a 5-0 advantage.

The lone blemish on the day for starter Sam Lund came in the sixth when a hit and an error set up a run scoring situation that the College of DuPage (27-7-1, 11-4) capitalized on with a fielder's choice ground ball on the infield.

Sam Lund (2-3) limited the Chaparrals to four hits and one unearned run in six innings. The Sun Prairie (WI) HS product struck out five batters for his second win in as many starts. Jared Horton tossed a scoreless seventh to finish out the WolfPack win.

Offensively, three players enjoyed two hit games: Kian O'Brien, Nick Kanavas, and Ronnie Cross. O'Brien touched home twice and Carson Carmody had a team-high two runs driven in.

Madison College and the College of DuPage will play another doubleheader on Monday, a make up date from a twin bill that was postponed three times prior. Game one in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, starts at 2:15 p.m.
