WolfPack narrowly swept at Lake County

Madison College falls a run short in each loss despite outhitting the Lancers

GRAYSLAKE, ILL. - A high-scoring afternoon of softball ended with a pair of one-run losses for Madison College, falling 10-9 and 14-13 at College of Lake County on Monday. The doubleheader, a makeup from Saturday, April 9, marked the first time all season the WolfPack have been swept by a single opponent, and was the first multi-loss day since March 15.

Game #1: College of Lake County 10, Madison College 9

The first game opened with the homestanding Lancers seizing control with four runs in the first innings. WolfPack starter Elizabeth Wahl struggled to find her control in the circle, hitting one batter, walking another, and hurling a wild pitch all before there were two outs on the scoreboard. Add in three hits, including a triple, and a pair of Madison College defensive errors, and Wahl was immediately in a deep hole.

It got deeper in the second when two walks sandwiched around a single by Lake County loaded the bases and forced coach Leo Kalinowski to turn to his bullpen after 1 1/3 innings. Jenalee Wilson stepped in and limited the Lancers to one additional run, thanks to solid defense as the new pitcher cut down the lead runner at home against her first batter. The lone run came on a walk with the sacks still packed.

The WolfPack offense came to life in the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits, two bases on balls, and an error. Lindsey Bollig started the rally with a triple to right and scored on a passed ball. Back-to-back walks and a Kiana Smith single made it 5-2. After a sacrifice fly brought the 'Pack to within two, a two-run error by the Lancer shortstop gave Bollig a chance to give Madison College the lead. She did just that with a single to center to score Breanna Bollig.

The advantage would change hands during each of the next three half innings. Lake County regained the lead with two runs in the home half of the fourth. The WolfPack answered with two in the top of the fifth on a RBI double by Brenna Seeber, who then scored on a run-scoring single for Breanna Bollig to make it 8-7. The Lancers brought it to 10-8 with a pair of scores in the bottom of the fifth.

Down to the final outs in the seventh, Madison College made it 10-9 when Seeber turned a leadoff walk into a run when Cheyenne Holmes registered a two-out RBI. Holmes reached second on the play, but remained more than 60 feet from home as Lindsey Bollig's grounder to second ended the game.

Brenna Seeber finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while both Bolligs and Kiana Smith each tallied two hits.

Jenalee Wilson (9-4) took the loss in relief, her first in her last six appearances. Wilson allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Starter Elizabeth Wahl surrendered five earned runs on four hits and three walks in less than two innings. The WolfPack finished with three errors.

Game #2: College of Lake County 14, Madison College 13 (5 innings)

Game two of the twin bill provided another heavy workload for the scoreboard operator. Madison College scored in the first as Lindsey Bollig singled in Breanna Bollig for the game's first run; however, Lake County (12-21) responded with a three-spot in the bottom half against WolfPack freshman Hannah Jensen.

Five hits led to five runs for the visitors in the second, highlighted by Brooke Heck's run producing triple to right. The freshman eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it a 6-3 WolfPack lead.

The advantage didn't last long as two hits, two walks, and two errors added up to six runs in the bottom of the second and a 9-6 edge for the Lancers.

As was customary in this doubleheader, the lead changed hands for the fourth consecutive half inning when Heck smashed a three-run home to right, capping a four frame. The long ball is the first of Heck's career and put Madison College on top 10-9.

The lead stretched to 13-9 in the fourth courtesy of three straight extra base hits. Lindsey Bollig opened with a double, Bailey Kratt followed with a triple, and Jordan Bell belted another double to make it 12-9. Bell later scored on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Savignac.

Running short of time and daylight, the Lancers put forth a five-run rally to steal the win in the bottom of the fifth. Lake County's right fielder ripped a clutch triple to center with the bases loaded and her team down 13-10 to even the game with just one out in the inning. She then scored the game-winning run with two outs on a wild pitch.

Jordan Bell was perfect at the plate with a team-high three hits, part of 15 total hits in the game for Madison College. The WolfPack actually outhit the Lancers on the day, 27-23. Five others - who hit one through five in the batting order - had two hits a piece. Bell and Breanna Bollig both scored three times, while Brooke Heck finished 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and two scored.

Hannah Jensen (5-6) took the loss, snapping a personal two-game win streak. The freshman from Watertown, Wisconsin, allowed a season-high 14 runs, including nine earned, on a dozen hits. She walked six and struck out four.

Madison College (19-14, 7-2) returns to North Central Community College Conference play on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Joliet Junior College (3-21, 3-8). The WolfPack defeated the Wolves 17-1 in five innings at the N4C Dome Jamboree on March 5. First pitch in Joliet, Illinois is set for 3:00 p.m.
