JOLIET, ILL. - Coming off a pair of heartbreaking losses Monday at College of Lake County, the Madison College softball team rebounded with a pair of resounding wins over Joliet Junior College by finals of 17-4 and 13-2 on Tuesday. Both wins came in five innings, marking the fifth time in the last eight games.
?Game #1: Madison College 17, Joliet Junior College 4 (5 innings)The Madison College bats picked up where they left off on Monday, pounding out 17 runs on a dozen hits against the Wolves. The scoring began in the first inning with a
Bailey Kratt single that brought in two runs as
Breanna Bollig scored and
Brooke Heck came in on an extra throw.
The game's biggest swing came in the second when freshman
Brooke Heck smashed her second home run in as many days to make it 5-0.
Kiana Smith began the inning with a triple and was joined on the base paths by
Brenna Seeber after a one-out walk. Heck is now second on the team in homers.
Joliet made a game of it in their half of the second, plating three runs on two hits. One of the hits was a two-run blast over the center field wall off right-handed pitcher
Hannah Jensen. It's only the second home run the freshman has allowed this season and the first since her collegiate debut against Kirkwood Community College on February 26.
The WolfPack came right back with two more runs in the third before blowing the game wide open with a six-run fourth inning to make it 13-3. That inning featured doubles by Heck,
Lindsey Bollig, and
Samantha Yaeger, the last two resulting in runs. And for good measure, the 'Pack tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth
Hannah Jensen (6-6) closed out the win with back-to-back strikeouts, part of a season-high seven in the game. She finished with three earned runs on five hits in here five innings of work.
Brooke Heck paced the offense, going 3-for-3 with two extra base hits, three runs scored, and three more driven in. Four others recorded multiple hits, while
Meredith Holt also scored three times and
Samantha Yaeger matched Heck with three RBI.
?Game #2: Madison College 13, Joliet Junior College 2 (5 innings)The nightcap was a different game, but a similar story as Madison College scored runs in every inning en rout to another run-rule victory. It began with two runs in the first, one coming on a
Breanna Bollig triple in the game's second at bat. After Joliet Junior College (3-23, 3-10) got one back in the home half, the WolfPack pulled away with five more runs to start the second. Three walks and a single opened the scoring before a two-run single from
Lindsey Bollig and a two-run triple by
Bailey Kratt closed it with a Madison College leading 7-1.
The WolfPack kept it going with two runs in the third and another one in the fourth to make it 10-1. Transfer sophomore
Taylor O'Leksy made it a ten-run advantage in the fifth with a two-out solo home run to center, her first of the season. Madison College reached a 13-1 advantage after
Summer Zachow's RBI double.
Top hitting honors went to
Breanna Bollig's 3-for-3 effort with two runs scored and two batted in.
Hannah Jensen and
Bailey Kratt also had mult-hit games as Madison College finished the day with 30 runs scored on 25 hits.
Brooke Heck had a team-leading three RBI in the finale.
Jenalee Wilson (11-4) limited the Wolves to two runs - neither were earned - on five hits over five innings. The Portage, Wisconsin, native struck out four batters to increase her team-high total to 56 on the year.
In the midst of an extremely busy week, Madison College (21-14, 9-2) is off on Wednesday before beginning a late-week home stand with a N4C doubleheader against Triton College (18-16, 5-6) on Thursday. The WolfPack are 1-0 against the Trojans, picking up a
6-3 win on March 4 at the N4C Dome Jamboree. First pitch at the Goodman Sports Complex is 3:00 p.m.
