Huge first half gives #5 WolfPack lopsided win

Madison College opens with 11-0 run at Elgin, wins by 41

ELGIN, ILL. - Big run after big run in the first half Saturday propelled the Madison College women's basketball team to a 77-36 road rout of Elgin Community College in a Region IV matchup. The #5 WolfPack began the game with a 11-0 burst and held a 41-13 advantage at the half before earning their second straight win and third in four all-time meetings against the Spartans.

The list of Madison College (8-1) runs throughout the first half is impressive. An 11-0 to open the game, followed by a 13-3 surge to close the first quarter and open the second, and another 11-0 in the second quarter before Elgin Community College (2-4) hit a three-pointer with 3:11 left in the half to finally reach double-digit points. The WolfPack defense limited the Spartans to a 5-for-22 (22.7%) shooting effort in the first 20 minutes, while also forcing 15 turnovers.

The visiting 'Pack also finished the game with major advantages in points off turnovers (20-8), second chance points (19-7), points in the paint (40-16), rebounds (54-33), offensive rebounds (25-13), and turnovers against (13-23).

Freshman Megan Corcoran led all players in scoring with 18 points, matching a career-high established one game prior. The former Madison La Follette athlete has been in double figures in three straight games and four overall. She also tied for a team-best four assists and registered the team's lone block. Corcoran shot 6-for-16 overall and 5-of-7 at the free throw line, but struggled to a 1-for-5 effort from long range.

Sophomore Rachel Slaney produced her second consecutive double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds. It's the fourth double-double of the season for the Barneveld, Wisconsin, native, who fell one rebound shy of tying for a career high. Slaney did set a new career-best mark with eight steals, and is now eighth in the country with a 4.3 steals per game average.

Also in double figures were Peyton Trapino with 14 points and Macy Graf with a dozen. Trapino, who also had tied Corcoran with four assists, now has five games with ten or more points, while Graf has surpassed that mark in three of the last four games and two straight.

Madison College returns to Redsten Gymnasium for a brief two-game homestand this week, beginning Wednesday against in-state foe Western Technical College (1-5). The former Wisconsin Technical College Conference rivals will be playing for the 88th time, with the WolfPack claiming a 68-19 edge in the series. The 'Pack have won two straight and 14 of the last 16 against the Cavaliers. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
