#5 WolfPack fend off newest in-state foe

Slaney, Corcoran fuel big third quarter surge against Bryant & Stratton

MADISON, WISC. - Finding themselves in a close game early against the newest NJCAA program in Wisconsin, Rachel Slaney and the Madison College women's basketball team sent a reminder to all of who the dominant program is within America's Dairyland. The #5 WolfPack, behind extended runs in the second and third quarters, pulled away from Bryant & Stratton College (Division II) for an 85-62 win at Redsten Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Tied at 26 with 8:09 remaining in the first half, Madison College (7-1) outscored the visiting Bobcats 18-7 to assume an 11-point lead at the break. The run began and ended with the three-pointers by freshman Megan Corcoran, who finished with a season-high three makes from beyond the arc. The 'Pack took full control of the game in the third quarter when they followed up a Bryant & Stratton College (4-4) jumper to open the half with a 17-0 run over the next five minutes, 20 seconds. The run again began with a Corcoran jump shot, as the Madison La Follette (WI) HS product tallied nine points in surge.

The three-point shot played a big factor in the contest, as sophomore All-American Rachel Slaney opened the game with a make from long range. The Barneveld, Wisconsin, native would hit one more in the first quarter and finish with a team-best and season-high four 3-pointers in the game. The Bobcats also used the long ball to keep the game close - thought they never lead in the game - making six of their seven successful 3's in the first half. Kiara Donaldson hit all four of her triples in the opening 20 minutes.

Slaney finished with a game-high 33 points, her third 30-plus point game of the season and the fourth of her career. The 5'10" forward was 9-for-15 overall and 11-of-13 at the free throw line, where she leads the nation with 9.9 makes and 12.6 attempts per game. Slaney also had a team-leading 15 rebounds, four blocks, and four steals. The double-double is her third in the last five games and the 11th of her college career.

Corcoran's career-high 18 points also came with nine rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Also in double figures were freshmen Mackenzie Ripp and Macy Graf, with both establishing new career-highs with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Ripp, along with Peyton Trapino had nine boards as the WolfPack won the battle on the glass by a 62-55 margin. Trapino, a freshman from DeForest, Wisconsin, dished out a team-best five assists.

For the game, Madison College shot 37.7-percent (26-69) from the field, 58-percent (7-12) from distance, and 81-percent (26-32) at the charity stripe, helping to build a 26-point lead in the third quarter. The home team also controlled the interior, scoring a 28-16 edge in points in the paint.

Following a 2-1 homestand, the WolfPack are back on the road Saturday, December 3 for a non-conference matchup against Region IV foe Elgin Community College (2-3). Madison College has won two of the three meetings between the two programs, with all of the game being playing within the last four three years. The home team is a perfect 3-0 in the head-to-head series. Tip off is at 1:00 p.m. in Elgin, Illinois.
