#5 WolfPack move to 2-0 with come-from-behind win

Slaney drops 29 in three-point defeat of D1 Highland CC

FREEPORT, ILL. - Despite playing through foul trouble, All-America Rachel Slaney hoisted the Madison College women's basketball team on her back and carried them to a rousing 67-64 road win over Highland Community College (NJCAA Division I) on Saturday. The victory moves the WolfPack to 2-0 under new coach Lois Heeren, who will make her home debut later this week.

Slaney scored a season-high 29 points, the second highest single game total of her career behind a 32-point effort in last year's District B Championship game against Mid Michigan Community College. The Barneveld, Wisconsin, native was just 5-for-11 from the field, but drew foul after foul on the Cougars defense to earn 22 trips to the free throw line, where she converted 19 shots. Both are career-high's for the sophomore, and could likely be program records as well. The 5'10" forward was also in foul trouble in the first half, and after a stint on the bench, surged the WolfPack back in front before the half.

Madison College (2-0) led 37-35 at the break before Highland CC (0-1) found a third quarter rhythm to assume a 54-51 advantage heading into the fourth. The WolfPack, behind Slaney's aggressive attacks to the basket, was able to rally for a 16-10 edge in the final quarter, with most of the difference coming at the charity stripe. The visitors finished 30-for-45 (66.7%), compared to a measly 4-of-7 at the line for Highland.

Freshman Peyton Trapino struggled at the free throw line, making 2-of-9 attempts, but finished with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fellow first year Cheyanne Udelhoven added ten points and six boards.

Madison College was out-worked on the glass by a 45-37 margin. The 'Pack did collect 10 steals, paced by three each for Slaney and Udelhoven.

Next up is the season opener for Madison College when they host Fox Valley Technical College (0-1) on Wednesday, November 9 at Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack is 8-0 all-time against the Foxes, with seven of the wins coming over the past three seasons. The average margin of victory in the head-to-head matchups has been 27.6 points. Wednesday will also be Parent's Night for the 2016-17 WolfPack. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
