Women’s Basketball Suffers First Defeat of Season

After six games and a perfect record for first year head coach Lois Heeren and the #5 WolfPack, Madison College was narrowly defeated at the hands of the #9 Rochester Community & Technical College Yellowjackets, 70-68, on Tuesday night. The WolfPack held a 32-28 lead at halftime, but a stifling Yellowjacket defense and a strong effort from beyond the arc for Rochester proved to be the difference. The WolfPack fell to 6-1 on the year after the two point loss to the NJCAA DIII and 2-0 Yellowjackets.

Madison bested Rochester in every major statistical category but two: turnovers and three-point shots. The WolfPack outshot Rochester from the field (43.4% to 32.9%), points in the paint (26 to 16), free throw points (19 to 7), points per shot (1.04 to .82), and bench points (22 to 14); but were unable to overcome Rochester's advantage in turnovers forced and three point shots made. Rochester forced the 'Pack to commit 26 turnovers to their 18, as well as making eight more shots beyond the arc than the home team.

Rachel Slaney once again led the WolfPack's scoring effort with 20 points, while Jamie Falk and Megan Corcoran joined her in double-digits with 12 points apiece. In 24 minutes of action, Slaney shot 11-for-14 from the charity stripe and tallied seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Guard Peyton Trapino led the team with eight rebounds, and Corcoran was right behind with seven. Trapino and Corcoran both dished out three assists.

The now 6-1 WolfPack remains in Madison for a post-Thanksgiving matchup with the NJCAA DII Bryant and Stratton College Bobcats on Wednesday, November 30 at 5:30 p.m. The visiting Bobcats come into the game with a 4-3 record in the first season of the program's existence.
