CRYSTAL LAKE, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team and new head coach
Lois Heeren successfully opened the 2016-17 season with a 74-71 road win over NJCAA Division II McHenry County College thanks to a fourth quarter rally. The #5 WolfPack have won four straight season openers and are now 2-0 all-time against the Scots.
Neither team lead by more than six through a back-and-forth first three quarters of the game, which finished with nine lead changes and ten ties. Madison College trailed by four to start the fourth, but tied the game in just 45 seconds on a
Peyton Trapino jumper. Tied at 65 with 4:51 to play, the WolfPack took advantage of free throw opportunities, hitting 4-of-6 en route to building a seven point advantage. McHenry County College (0-1) had one last burst left, hitting a three-point basket and a layup within the final ten seconds to pull within one. Sophomore
Jamie Falk provided the final cushion with a basket in the paint with just a few ticks of the clock remaining.
Madison College (1-0) shot 37.7% overall and made six 3-pointers, however, the WolfPack struggled at charity stripe by making just 22-of-39 (56.4%). The win also came despite an eye-opening 29 turnovers that lead to 30 Scots points. Madison College did force 24 turnovers on 20 steals to help stay within striking distance before the final push.
Freshman Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven registered a game-high 21 points in her Madison College debut. The Fennimore, Wisconsin, native hit made five shots from beyond the arc, while also finishing with nine rebounds, three assists, and a team-high six steals. Fellow first year Payton Trapino was 6-for-9 at the free throw line as part of an 18 point effort in her collegiate debut. The native of DeForest, Wisconsin, matched Udelhoven with six steals to go along with six rebounds.
Sophomore
Jamie Falk added 13 points, while fellow second year
Rachel Slaney went 0-for-5 from the floor on a six-point night. The All-American struggled with foul trouble all game before eventually fouling out, but not before securing a team-leading ten rebounds and four assists, in addition to five steals. The six points is the second lowest point total in a game during the Barneveld, Wisconsin, native's career.
Madison College will remain on the road for the season's second game against NJCAA Division I Highland Community College (1-0). It will be the first ever meeting between the two programs. Tip off Saturday, November 5 is at 1:00 p.m.
