Big first half leads to season opening win for WolfPack men

Freshman Burton scores 17 points in debut, soph. O'Donnell adds double-double

CRYSTAL LAKE, ILL. - If you can tell a lot about a team's season by it's first half of basketball, then the Madison College men's basketball team could be in for a monstrous 2016-17 after a 58-48 season-opening win at McHenry County College (NJCAA Division II) on Tuesday. The win also marks the first career victory for new WolfPack head coach Bill Kegler.

Madison College opened the game on an 8-0 run, forcing the Scots to switch out of their man-to-man defense. The WolfPack went on to shoot 50-percent from the field, going 15-for-30 overall and 4-of-11 behind the arc, en route to a 36-19 halftime lead. The defense did it's part, as well, holding McHenry County College (0-1) to just six converted field goals on 24 shot attempts in the half, good for 25-percent.

Freshman Jezzriah Burton finished with a game-high 17 points in his collegiate debut. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native drained five of his nine 3-point attempts to light up the scoreboard from long-range.

Sophomore Joel O'Donnell did his part to give the WolfPack control of the paint. The 6'4" Monona Grove (WI) HS grad scored all 16 of his points from the interior and reeled in 12 rebounds for the first double-double of his collegiate career. The points and rebounds totals are also both career highs for O'Donnell, who also had a blocked shot in the contest.

The WolfPack forced 15 Scots turnovers while only committing nine themselves.

Madison College (1-0) remains on the road to play Highland Community College (NJCAA Division I) on Saturday. The meeting will mark the first all-time between the two schools. Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m.
