VERONA, WISC. - The Madison College women's soccer team began the 2016 Region IV Division III Tournament with a 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Triton College on Wednesday at Reddan Soccer Park. The third win this season against the Trojans sets a program record for wins in a year with nine and sends the WolfPack to the Region IV semifinals for the third consecutive year.
Having outscored Triton College (6-9) by a 6-1 margin during the regular season, Madison College (9-7) looked to play from ahead early and did. Sophomore
Katie Travis broke through the Trojans defense to score the game's first goal in the 14th minute. It's the ninth goal of the season for the Burlington, Wisconsin, native.
The 1-0 advantage carried into the second half thanks a 9-5 edge in shots during the first 45 minutes. That number would flip, however, as the Trojans turned up the pressure with a 10-3 disparity in shots in the second half. Luckily, freshman goaltender
Brandie Gospodarek and the WolfPack defense was up to the challenge. The Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, native turned away seven shots and turned in a clean sheet for her fifth shutout of the season.
Despite the low shot total in the second half, Madison College was able to add some breathing room in the 63rd minute when sophomore
Arianna Viscarra set up freshman
Breanne Kreklow for a goal and a 2-0 lead. Kreklow, a product of New Glarus (WI) HS, also has nine goals on the season, topping the list for goals by a first year player.
The fourth-seeded WolfPack will head to the Region IV semifinals on Saturday, October 22 to square off with top-seeded College of DuPage (15-5-3). The Chaparrals claimed the North Central Community College Conference crown and are currently ranked #5 in the latest
NJCAA Division III Poll. Madison College lost twice by scores of 1-0 against DuPage in two regular season meetings and has never beaten the Chaparrals in eight all-time meetings. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m. in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
