The Madison College men's basketball team scored the first ten points of Wednesday night's North Central Community College Conference game at Harper College (10-13, 1-6), and never looked back in finishing off their first road win in conference play with a 75-57 final. The victory also ended a four-game losing skid for the WolfPack (8-13, 2-5).
Freshman
Cortez McCree kick started the early blitz with six straight points and the 'Pack still maintained a ten-point advantage with 9:09 to play in the half. However, the Hawks put together a quick 9-0 run to pull within one at 19-18. Madison College quickly quieted the noise, outscoring the home team 12-5 to lead by eight at the break.
In the second half, the visitors pulled away over the final 11 minutes thanks to eight points from
Markus Tobias and nine from
Tyler Meier, who connected on three shots from beyond the arc. As a team, the WolfPack shot 67% in the second half, going 14-for-21 with four 3-pointers and a 12-for-16 effort at the free throw line. Harper, meanwhile, struggled to a 13-of-35 (37%) performance after halftime.
First-year player
Markus Tobias put together his second double-double of the season. The Oregon, Wisconsin, product tallied 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 6-of-8 at the charity stripe, to go along with ten rebounds. It's the second time in three games Tobias has surpassed ten points.
Cortez McCree used his fast start to score 13 points, snapping a three-game run of sub-ten-point scoring. The Madison, Wisconsin, native also had a team-best three steals.
Ethan Lurquin was the only other player to reach double-figures, dropping in 11 points and grabbing seven boards.
Tyler Meier accounted for all nine of his points during that second half run, while
Kristian Zimmerman had eight points off the bench.
Madison College continues play on Saturday, January 30 with a road trip to Chicago, Illinois, to face N4C foe Wilbur Wright College (4-17, 0-6). The WolfPack have won three straight over the Rams, including a
70-56 decision last month. Since WWC joined the league, Madison College has owned the head-to-head series, taking ten of 13 games, including five of the last six. Gametime is set for 3:00 p.m.
