Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

16th straight win sets up Top-5 showdown for WolfPack women

The second-ranked Madison College women's basketball team stepped out of conference play to pick up their 16th win of the season, a 62-36 decision over UW-Marathon County in Wausau, Wisconsin on Monday night. The win also marked the 200th coaching victory for tenth-year head coach Jessica Pelzel.

The WolfPack came off the team bus firing on all cylinders, scoring the game's first 13 points, and rode that momentum to a 21-6 lead heading to the second quarter. Madison College turned the Huskies over 13 times in the opening quarter, part of 25 total miscues for UW-MC in the game that Pelzel's squad cashed in for 23 points. The home team was also pressured into a 3-for-12 shooting effort over the game's first ten minutes and would hit just 20% (11-55) for the game overall. The 'Pack increased its lead to 23 at the half as it improved to 16-0 on the season and 7-0 away from Madison. For the game, Madison College was 26-of-73 from the field and just 3-for-22 from long range. The visitors did own a 14 rebound advantage on the glass and a 38-8 edge in points in the paint.

Individually, Rachel Slaney fell two rebounds shy of her third consecutive double-double with 14 points and eight boards, both team-highs. The former three-time high school all-state forward also registered three steals, two assists, and a pair of blocks. The only other player in double figures was Jenna Endres, whose 12 points pushed her consecutive game streak of ten or more points to 25 games dating back to last season. The sophomore's 2-for-8 3-point shooting effort was the fewest made beyond the arc in seven games since a 1-of-9 output against Western Tech on December 2. During the six game stretch, Endres connected on 54.9% (28-51) of her three-point tries. Mandi Sargent and Kaitlyn Kast each pitched in with eight points. Taylor Nelson finished with a team-high five assists, but tallied a season-low four points on 2-for-7 shooting.

The win sets up a mid-season showdown between the two top-rated teams in the North Central Community College Conference as #2 Madison College visits #4 Rock Valley College on Wednesday, January 13 in Rockford, Illinois. The Golden Eagles are 12-6 overall and 1-1 in the N4C after most recently falling at MATC-Milwaukee 82-67 on January 9. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
