Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Newly minted #1 WolfPack suffer season's first loss

Just hours after being named the new #1 team in the NJCAA Division III National Polls, the Madison College women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the 2015-16 season, falling 66-55 at #5 Rock Valley College on Wednesday in Rockford, Illinois. The 16-1 start for the WolfPack will go down as the second best in school history, trailing only the 25-0 run made by the 1987-88 squad.

The game featured six ties and five lead changes as the 'Pack and Golden Eagles traded baskets. Rock Valley (13-6, 2-1) took a 30-28 lead into halftime, before slowly pulling away in the second half. The home team opened the third quarter on a quick 5-0 run before Madison College squared the score at 43-43 with 3:03 to play in the quarter. However, Rock Valley netted the final seven points, five by Chrisseesha Clark, to begin the fourth quarter with a 50-43 advantage. Madison College was unable to slow the momentum as the deficit swelled beyond double-digits on five separate occasions over the final ten minutes.

Neither team shot the ball extremely well, with the WolfPack going 19-for-65 (29%) from the floor compared to a 23-for-61 (37.7%) mark by the Golden Eagles. With all the missed shots, there were 37 total offensive rebounds in the game, 19 of which belonged to Madison College and triggered to a 13-4 scoring advantage in second chance points. The two teams combined for 33 turnovers, with Rock Valley owning a 17-11 edge in points off turnovers.

Jenna Endres and Rachel Slaney were the lone Madison College players in double figures. Endres paced the attack with 14 points despite an 0-for-6 effort beyond the arc that marked the first time in 46 career games the sophomore guard failed to connect on at least one three-point attempt. Slaney tallied ten points, seven rebounds, and five steals. The freshman also contributed seven of the team's 16 turnovers. All-America guard Taylor Nelson's scoring struggles continued with eight points on 3-of-14 shooting for her first career three-game stretch without reaching double figures. The sophomore did register a team-best four assists, to go along with five rebounds. Megan Petty and Mandi Sargent match Slaney's team-high seven boards, while also scoring six points each. Anna Bunyan's statline contained seven points and five rebounds.

After a three-game road swing the WolfPack, now 1-1 in North Central Community College Conference play, return home to host 20th-ranked (NJCAA DII) Triton College (13-6, 2-1) on Saturday, January 16. Since the Trojans joined the league in 2010, Madison College has won nine straight games and own a 12-1 advantage all-time. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
