Game Recap: Baseball |

Madison Baseball wins two close games against Triton

In their third day of six straight home doubleheaders, the Madison College team secured two more wins over the N4C Triton College Trojans with 2-1 and 4-3 wins. In the two one-run wins, Madison scored late in the games to defeating the visiting Trojans. Madison scored the winning run in the fifth inning in the opener, and in the seventh inning in game two.

Madison held the 1-0 lead in game one after scoring in the first inning, but Triton was able to tie the game 1-1 after scoring a fourth inning run. Both teams were held scoreless for in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth respectively, until Madison grabbed the lead on a Mike Jordahl fielder's choice. Starter Derek Heffel silenced Triton and held on for the win.

Both teams were held to five hits, and Luke Yapp led the way with two hits in two at bats. He also had one of the WolfPack RBI, Jordahl recorded the other, and Brandon Gibis and Travis Hamilton scored the two runs. Gibis and Tony Butler both recorded stolen bases. Heffel had a great day from the mound and threw seven solid innings of five-hit baseball. He did allow one earned run and walked one, but he struckout four in the win that improved his record to 5-0.

Game two started off quite the same as the opener as the WolfPack plated a first inning run for the early lead, but Triton answered quickly this time with one run in the second inning to tie the game. The Triton lead didn't last long, as Madison scored another run in the third to take back the lead, this time 2-1. Both teams were held scoreless for two innings, until Triton took back the lead with two runs in the sixth inning for the 3-2 lead. Once again, that Triton lead didn't hold up for long as Madison quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game up once again. Knotted up at 3-3, Luke Yapp's seventh inning RBI single up the middle plated Jordahl and gave the WolfPack the 4-3 walk-off win.

Sam Hurt finished the game as the leading hitter after his 3-for-4 day, with one RBI and a run scored. The duo of Hamilton and Yapp, a well-known law firm, each had two hits. Yapp was also the team leader with two RBI, including the game-winner. Brandon Parr recorded a quality start of eight hits and two earned runs in six innings of work, but he didn't pick up the win. Reliever Jared Horton earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the season after throwing a quality seventh inning.

The baseball team has two days off before once again hosting another N4C team on Wednesday, April 22. The 23-10 WolfPackl will play the College of DuPage Chaparrals in a doubleheader at Robin Roberts Field, with the first game starting at 2:30 p.m.
