The WolfPack started another mini winning streak by defeating the Black Hawk Braves 2-1 in the first game at Robin Roberts Field, but then dropped game two 1-4. Starter Westin Weuthrich and reliever
Brandon Parr combined in a gem to secure the low-scoring win for Madison, but the lack of offense hurt the team in game two.
Â
The Madison offense only mustered three hits in the opener, and were actually outhit by the Braves who recorded four, but the home team had the last laugh. Black Hawk took the early 1-0 lead in the second, but Madison countered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie it up. Both teams were held in check at the plate until
Brandon Gibis' sacrifice fly to rightfield drove in
Ryan Makuski for the walk-off win.
Â
Matt Cole recorded the lone extra basehit (a double) for the 'Pack, and
Brandon Gibis and
Travis Hamilton recorded the other two hits for the team. Hamilton and Makuski scored the two WolfPack runs, and
Luke Yapp recorded a steal. Weuthrich didn't have his best stuff on the mound, but threw five effective innings of two-hit ball. He only allowed one unearned run, but he did walk seven, threw one wild pitch, and balked to runners over. Weuthrich left the game when it was knotted up at one, and
Brandon Parr was summoned in to relieve him. Parr picked up the win in two scoreless innings of work. Parr improved to 3-1 on the year.
Â
In the second game, the WolfPack grabbed the lead first with a first inning run, but Black Hawk plated four runs to start off the second inning. The game remained scoreless from there on out, and the two teams effectively split the doubleheader.
Â
Luke Yapp was the leading hitter for the WolfPack as he went 2-for-3 at the plate,
Tony Butler scored the lone Madison run, and
Courtney Watkins was credited with the RBI. As a team, Madison only could muster four hits to the Braves 10, and the WolfPack was limited to seven hits in the two game series with Black Hawk. In game two, Madison College batters were actually hit by pitches four times to equal the number of hits for the team, and
Courtney Watkins led the team by being hit three times.
Â
Ryne Blanton fell to 4-2 on the year after earning the loss in six innings of work, and
Clayton Uselman pitched one inning in relief.
Â
The 19-10 WolfPack host another doubleheader this Saturday, April 18 when the Harper College Hawks come to town. The first game of the N4C doubleheader starts at 12:00 p.m.
