Game Recap: Baseball |

Madison Baseball ends Arizona spring trip with two close losses

The WolfPack baseball trip ended their annual pre-season trip south with two losses in Tucson, AZ Friday afternoon. Madison dropped their first game to the Williston State College (ND) Tetons 0-5 to end on the wrong side of the season series with Williston after splitting two games earlier in the trip. The neutral site loss drops the WolfPack's record to 3-6. The 'Pack then lost the finale of their excursion 2-3, as the host Pima Community College Aztecs plated a run in the ninth for the win.

In the first game against Williston State, played on the campus of Pima CC, the WolfPack and Teton played scoreless baseball for three innings, and then the Williston offense got on track. Williston scored solo runs in both the top halves of the fourth and fifth innings for enough offense for the win, before scoring three runs in the seventh. Madison College was only able to muster six hits in the game, and only helped out Williston with two fielding errors.

Courtney Watkins led the quiet 'Pack offense with two hits in his 2-for-3 day. Brandon Gibis, Luke Yapp, Mike Jordahl, and Simon Maurice all added singles as the Madison offense wasn't able to record any extra base hits.

Starter Brandon Parr threw a respectable game from the mound, only allowing seven hits in five innings of work. He also only allowed two runs (one earned), and struckout five, but was given the loss. Damian Guenther and Jared Horton pitched in relief of Parr, and Guenther was roughed up for three earned runs in one and two third innings. Horton pitched the last third inning for the 'Pack.

The game against Pima started off well for the WolfPack, as they got on the board first on Luke Yapp's RBI double. Pima struck right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score 1-1. After two scoreless innings, Madison took back the lead when Nick Kanavas scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. Armed with the 2-1 lead, the WolfPack held the Aztecs scoreless until Pima scored another solo run to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Back to an even 2-2 ballgame, both teams were held scoreless once again for two more innings until Pima scored a run in the ninth for the 3-2 extra inning win.

Courtney Watkins and Nick Kanavas both led the eight hit WolfPack offense with two hits apiece. Watkins went 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Kanavas went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kanavas also add a doubled to go along with Yapp's first inning two-bagger. Yapp provided the lone RBI, and Brandon Gibis, Sam Hurt, and Liam Kellogg also added singles.

WolfPack starter Marcellus Sneed threw another respectable game, going six innings in his start. He scattered five hits, surrendered two earned runs, and struckout four. Jarod Richter relieved Sneed and threw two and a third innings of four hit and four strikeout ball, before allowing the Aztec's winning run.

The 3-7 WolfPack returns home and has a few days off until travelling to Malta, IL for a doubleheader with the Kishwaukee College Kougars. The first game of the twinbill starts at 2:00 p.m.
