The Madison College softball team repeated yesterday's results, as they opened up their day in Clermont, FL at the NTC softball Complex with a 4-8 loss to the Dakota Technical College Blue Knights before easily defeating the Burlington County College (NJ) Barons 11-1.
In their first game against Dakota County,
Paige Giese and
Brianna Smith got the WolfPack rolling with RBIs for the early 3-0 lead. The pesky Blue Knights made things close with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut into Madison's lead. The WolfPack held the 3-2 lead for another inning before Dakota County's offense exploded for five runs off of Madison starter
Courtney Boss in the fifth inning. A WolfPack error and a passed ball aided the Blue Knights as only one of the five fifth-inning runs was earned. Â The Madison offense did show signs of coming alive, but the team was only able to plate one run in the top of the sixth inning. Down 4-7, Madison was unable to keep Dakota County from scoring another run in the sixth, and the WolfPack offense was shutout in the seventh. Dakota County did score one more run in their half of the sixth to pull ahead 8-4 before coming away with the victory.
Â
Cheyenne Holmes was the only player to record two hits as the WolfPack offense was mostly held in check. Holmes finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Paige Giese was one of four others to record at least a hit, and led the team with two RBI in her 1-for-3 day. Giese also scored a run.
Sadie Holmes and
Nicole Hoffmann also added stolen bases in the loss.
Â
Courtney Boss went the distance on the mound for the 'Pack and finished with a respectable stat line. In six innings, Boss gave up seven hits and eight runs, but seven of the eight were unearned. She also struck out two.
Â
In their 11-1 win over the Burlington Barons, the WolfPack won in convincing style with an early run in the second and nine more in the third inning. Up 10-0 over the team from New Jersey after three innings, Madison surrendered one run to their opponent in the fourth before getting it back in the bottom of the frame. The 'Pack then held the Barons scoreless in the fifth as they walked away with the 11-1 win shortened due to the run rule.
Â
Madison College belted out 10 hits, including three extra base hits, and were aided by two Baron errors. The trio of
Kayla Crump,
Breanna Guenther, and
Kiana Smith led the team at the plate with two hits apiece. Crump finished the day 2-for-4 with one RBI, two runs scored, and one steal.
Breanna Guenther went 2-for-2 with a double, but led the team with three RBI.
Kiana Smith also went 2-for-2, recorded two RBI, and scored a team leading three runs.
Â
Starting pitcher
Jenalee Wilson threw a complete game to improve to 3-2 after the win. In her five innings, Wilson held Burlington to two hits, surrendered a run, and finished with four strike outs.
The Madison College softball team concludes their Florida Spring Trip with one last game tomorrow morning in Clermont, FL before flying home to beautiful Wisconsin. Madison takes on the Muscatine Community College Cardinals at 9:00 a.m. at the NTC Softball Complex. The 'Pack is 13-6 overall and 8-5 in their spring trip with just one more game to go.
