Madison Softball ends spring trip with win

In their final game in their excursion south, the Madison College softball team made the trip as worthwhile as possible. The WolfPack overcame a 4-2 deficit by scoring seven runs in the fourth inning, and held on for the 9-6 win over the Muscatine CC Cardinals. After the victory on March 21 in Clermont, FL, the 'Pack improves to 9-5 in the trip south and 14-6 overall.

The game didn't start the way Madison wanted to as they were sat down in the first and Muscatine put up two runs in the bottom half for the early lead. Down 2-0, the WolfPack whittled away at the deficit with solo runs in both the second and third innings to tie the game 2-2. The lead wouldn't last long though, as the Cardinals snatched it back and were back on top 4-2 after three innings. The floodgates opened up for Madison College in the fourth inning though, and the team scored seven runs for the commanding 9-4 lead. The Madison offense couldn't plate anymore runs, and the pitching and defense did its best to hold on and limited Muscatine to solo runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Kiana Smith was the leading hitter for the 'Pack, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Cheyenne Holmes, Breanna Guenther, and Jessie Steindorf also joined the hit parade by all adding two hits. The trio all recorded doubles, one RBI, and one run scored.

Ashley Stormer started the game for the 'Pack and faced a few setbacks in three innings, allowing four runs (3 earned). Courtney Boss relieved Stormer on the mound, and was more effective in her four innings and earned the win. Boss only surrendered one earned run, while stricking out two in picking up her fifth win of the season.

With the 9-6 win, Madison has nearly a week off before participating in the Blue Knight Crossover Tournament in Rosemount, MN. The tournament features four high-quality NJCAA Division II opponents for the WolfPack: the Bismarck State College (ND) Mystics, the Dawson Community College (MT) Buccaneers, the Lake Region State College (ND) Royals, and the host Dakota County Technical College (MN) Blue Knights. All games of the Blue Knight Crossover Tournament will be held in Rosemount, MN at the Irish Sports Dome. Madison College's first game on Friday, March 27 against Bismarck State College (ND) starts at 3:00 p.m. The 'Pack plays Dawson Community College (MT) at 5:00 p.m. later that day. The WolfPack finishes the tournament with two more games on March 28 against Lake Region State College (ND) at 1:15 p.m. and host Dakota County Technical College (MN) at 4:45 p.m.
