Madison Baseball loses heartbreaker to Mesa

The Madison College baseball team couldn't hold the lead as they lost to the Mesa Community College Thunderbirds 6-7 in Mesa, AZ on March 19. Mesa took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the WolfPack tied it up at 2-2 in the third frame. Both teams' bats were held silent until Madison finally went on top 4-2 with two runs in the top of the sixth. The lead evaporated as quickly as it was gained when Mesa played three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 5-4 advantage. After a scoreless inning for the two teams, Madison once again got on the board and held another lead, this 6-5 after their two run eighth inning. Reliever Jared Horton wasn't able to slam the door on the Thunderbirds, as they countered for two runs of their own. Madison had one last chance to win the game in the ninth, but they only could muster a double and a walk before they were served the close 6-7 loss.

Sam Hurt was the leading hitter for the WolfPack and went 2-for-4 at the plate, with a double, a team-high three RBI, and one run scored. Four others recorded hits for Madison, as they offense was held in check with only six hits. The team did walk seven times, but it wasn't enough for the victory. Besides Hurt's double, Brandon Gibis and Travis Hamilton joined him with doubles of their own. Nick Kanavas recorded the long stolen base for the 'Pack

Starter Derek Heffel pitched seven solid innings, but walked away with no decision after the late game collapse. Heffel scattered seven hits, surrendered five runs (3 earned), and struck out one. Reliever Jared Horton was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs in one inning of work.

The WolfPack end their Arizona Spring Trip tomorrow afternoon with two games in Tucson, AZ. Madison College takes on the Williston State College Tetons in a seven-inning game at Pima Community College at 11:00 a.m., before playing the host Pima CC Aztecs at 3:00 p.m. in a nine-inning game.
