The Madison College baseball team started a doubleheader on a good note against the Williston State College (ND) Tetons by winning their first game 2-1, before suffering a 3-6 defeat in the finale. The doubleheader in Casa Grande, AZ were games 10 and 11 for Williston, while the WolfPack were playing games five and six. The split of the doubleheader will be changed as the two teams play one game on March 20 for the series rubber match in Tucson, AZ.
Â
In the opener, Williston State took the lead first with a run in the top of the fourth, before Madison College starter
Ryne Blanton really shutdown the Teton's offense. In seven innings, Blanton scattered five hits, surrendered one earned run, and struck out four. The Madison bats tied the game 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before adding one more run in the bottom of the fifth for the 2-1 lead and win.
Â
Nick Kanavas was the only WolfPack player to record two hits as he went 2-for-3; and the foursome of
Courtney Watkins,
Tony Butler,
Luke Yapp, and
Travis Hamilton each added a hit.
Tony Butler recorded the lone extra base hit for the 'Pack with a double. Kanavas and Yapp also contributed in other ways with stolen bases.
Â
The doubleheader finale didn't start or end well for the 'Pack as they fell behind 2-0 after the first inning before relinquishing a 3-1 lead and falling behind for good, 6-3.
Â
Liam Kellogg had the best day at the plate for Madison as he finished 2-for-2 at the dish, with a run scored.
Mike Aiello also recorded two hits and finished 2-for-3.
Brandon Gibis,
Luke Yapp, and
Ryan Makuski all recorded RBI; and
Nick Kanavas,
Courtney Watkins, and Kellogg scored the WolfPack runs. Madison attempt to play small ball were mixed, as they did record two sacrifice hits, but all three steal attempts by Madison were thwarted.
Â
Starting pitcher
Clayton Uselman was roughed up in three innings of work from the mound. He did record two strike outs, but surrendered six earned runs in his three innings.
Jarod Richter pitched great in his three innings of relief. Richter recorded three strike outs and only gave up two hits, but the damage already had been done.
Â
