For the first time in two years, the top ranked Madison College volleyball team dropped a set playing at home Tuesday night, needing four sets to beat Rock Valley College 3-1. However, it was not without a bit of controversy.
In the opening set, the WolfPack took care of business, beating the Golden Eagles 25-15. Rock Valley would rally back in the second though. Needing extra points to push past Madison College, things would get very interesting late in set number two.
With the WolfPack leading 27-26, Madison College got what they thought was a kill. In fact, they were all set to switch sides of the net, only to be told that there was a net violation called. The result was Rock Valley stealing the next two points to win 29-27 and tie the match at one set apiece.
When asked about the call, including what explanation he got for it, head coach
Toby Parker said, "Net violation, and I didn't get one."
Entering the third, Madison College was visibly flustered for the first time in a long while. However, in what was another back and forth type set, the WolfPack was able to pull things out 25-22.
"That was a point in that set, and in the match itself, that in a lot of gyms could've been a turning point," Parker said. "I'm proud of our girls for standing up to it."
Back on track,
Toby Parker's team would roll from there. Madison College captured the fourth and final set by a score of 25-18.
"Rock Valley played really, really good today," said sophomore middle blocker
Mikayla Nigl. "It made us work a lot harder as a team all together, and I'm just glad that we pulled through and got a win out of it."
Katlynn Wirag led the WolfPack offense with 17 kills on the night. Setter
Hannah Grahn picked up 38 assists, while
Brooke Gilbertson, one of the team's outside hitters, surprisingly led the team in digs with 17.
Madison College (10-1, 3-0) now has just one day to prepare for ninth-ranked Harper College. The WolfPack will host the Hawks Thursday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.
Earlier this season, competing in College of DuPage Invitational, the 'Pack bested Harper College 3-0. However, head coach
Toby Parker knows he'll see an even more game Hawks team this time around.
"We saw them earlier this year at the College of DuPage tournament, had some success against them," said Parker. "I would expect nothing remotely close to that from Harper on Thursday."
