WolfPack volleyball wins College of DuPage Invite

The defending national champs are off to a fantastic start in 2014. Saturday afternoon, the Madison College women's volleyball team took home the College of DuPage Invitational title, winning all four of their matches in the tournament.

Friday, against their opening round opponent, Oakton Community College, the WolfPack picked up a three-set sweep, 25-10, 25-21 and 25-8. Freshman Abbey Loken led the team with five kills, while sophomore Hannah Grahn picked up 12 assists. Defensively, Sydney Clarson finished with 16 digs.

Later in the evening, the 'Pack picked up their second sweep in as many matches, defeating Illinois Valley Community College 25-21, 25-18 and 25-18. Offensively, Brooke Gilbertson paced the WolfPack with seven kills and four service aces. Hannah Grahn picked up 17 assists, while Sydney Clarson had 17 digs.

Saturday, facing Moraine Valley Community College in their third match, things weren't quite as easy for Madison College. The team would drop their first set of the season, losing 25-23 in the second, before going on to win the next two. When all was said and done, the scores read 25-11, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-16.

Sophomore middle blocker Mikayla Nigl would lead the WolfPack offense in the toughest match of their young season. Nigl finished with 10 kills and added a block. Hannah Grahn tallied 28 assists and Sydney Clarson came up big with 30 digs.

Madison College finished off their tournament run by beating a familiar foe, North Central Community College Conference (N4C) rival Harper College, 25-10, 25-19 and 27-25. Sophomores Brooke Gilbertson and Katlynn Wirag each finished with 12 kills, as setter Hannah Grahn registered 25 assists. Sydney Clarson's 21 digs led the team's defense.

Up next, the WolfPack will play their first road game of the season Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 6:00 p.m. when they visit McHenry County College. The team's home opener will soon follow, as Madison College hosts Joliet Junior College Thursday, Aug. 28 at 6:00 p.m.
