For the first 20 minutes of Tuesday night's game against Rochester Community & Technical College, the Madison College women's basketball team simply could not be stopped. Coming off a two-game losing streak, the WolfPack exploded for 57 first half points, shooting 62 percent from the field, on their way to a 93-66 victory.
"Hit the first couple shots of the game and everyone started rolling off of that," said head coach
Jessica Pelzel. "People coming off the bench just continued what we were doing with the starters. There was no drop-off, no matter who I put in."
That showed most prominently in the form of freshman guard
Taylor Strand. Strand came off the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points, hitting eight of her 14 shots, including four of five from beyond the arc.
"Coach put me in for a post player right away, and I don't play post, like a lick of it," said Strand. "It was kind of nice because they didn't realize that I was usually a shooting guard. So, they didn't step out on me."
"In the first half, she played four minutes and scored 10 points," said Pelzel. "I look kind of dumb for not putting her in the game more, but that's what we expect out of her. We know it can continue."
Strand was not the only player who was productive off the bench for Coach Pelzel. Reserves
Sydney Harms and
Jenna Endres added 15 and 14 points, respectively. In fact, the WolfPack's bench outscored the starters 54-39.
Collectively, Madison College knocked down 47 percent of their shots in the game. After leading it by 23 points at the half, the WolfPack would expand their lead to 34 points, 84-50, with eight minutes left in the game.
Defensively, Madison College forced 25 Yellowjackets turnovers, leading to 33 points.
While the win was something to be proud of, Coach Pelzel knows it needs to be kept in perspective. "I think level-headed, as far as we go, we got nothing to worry about, because we can look back at the last two games and say 'Wait a minute.' This is a good win for us, and a good confidence builder rolling through the Thanksgiving break."
The WolfPack (4-3) will visit UW-Waukesha Saturday at 1 p.m.
