The Madison College men's basketball team is for real, proving so again Tuesday night in a 69-67 win over second-ranked Rochester Community & Technical College. The WolfPack was led by a solid defense and sophomore guard
Tanner Schieve, who made some big plays down the stretch for the home team.
"I told him after the game, 'That was your best game in two years," said head coach
Scot Vesterdahl. "It seemed like, in the second half, every time we needed somebody to make a play he was somewhere in the area. It was either him making it, or being somewhere near and helping to make it."
Where the West Bend, Wisconsin, native was particularly good Tuesday was the free-throw line. Schieve made seven of 10 attempts from the charity stripe, including one with 35 seconds left in the game to give the 'Pack a 68-67 lead.
"They always say you're supposed to go to the line and stay relaxed," said Schieve. "I've shot a million free-throws in my life, so I just step to the line and try to do the same thing I do in practice everyday."
Schieve's final stat line read 11 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist.
Despite making just four of 11 shots from the field,
Jerrod Walton once again led Madison College in scoring. Walton finished with a game-high 14 points, while also adding 11 boards, four blocks and a steal.
With the win, Madison College improved to 6-1 overall on the year, but there is no rest for the weary. "Part of our job as a coaching staff is to let them celebrate tonight and enjoy. And you know what? At 6:30 tomorrow morning we get back to practice," said Vesterdahl.
Up next, the WolfPack will visit UW-Waukesha Saturday at 3 p.m.
