The Madison College women's basketball team had a big test Wednesday night, matching up with an NJCAA Division I program in Sauk Valley Community College. Unfortunately, in the words of WolfPack head coach
Jessica Pelzel, the team "failed miserably," losing 82-48.
The most glaring problem for the 'Pack was accumulating 32 turnovers, leading to 34 Skyhawks points. Not coincidentally, that was the deficit by which the team eventually lost.,
In the first half, Madison College got out to a rough start, hitting just five of their 22 shots from the field (22 percent). The WolfPack would trail Sauk 34-18 at the break.
While Madison College stepped up their shooting the second half, so to did the Skyhawks. The WolfPack made 39 percent of their shots over the last 20 minutes, while Sauk Valley hit at a 46 percent clip.,
Only one member of the 'Pack would score in double-digits,
Kelly Calhoun, who finished with 11 points. Leading scorer
Taylor Nelson was held to just six, missing 11 of her 13 shots on the night.,
"We just didn't come to play," said Pelzel. "We used the word out-toughed at halftime, and I think that was a big thing. I mean, their guards were getting rebounds.",
Indeed, Madison College lost the battle of the boards 51-35. That margin helped Sauk to score 36 points in the paint.,
"Tomorrow in practice we'll get tough," Pelzel commented.
The WolfPack (3-2) visits Elgin Community College Saturday at 1 p.m. The Spartans are an NJCAA Division II opponent.,
