The last time the Madison College men's basketball team beat Sauk Valley Community College the year was 2007. That season the team finished 25-7 overall. Wednesday, hosting the Skyhawks, the WolfPack picked up just their second win against Sauk in the last eight years, coming away with a 71-64 victory.
"I think we're kind of flying under the radar right now," said freshman guard
Kris Seffrood. "I think this is a big time statement win for us.",
With 4:07 left in the first half, Madison College trailed the Skyhawks 28-26. However, the 'Pack closed on an 11-2 run, taking a 37-30 lead into the break.
Jerrod Walton, who finished with a game-high 22 points, and
Kristian Zimmerman teamed up to score nine of the team's points during that stretch.
The WolfPack offense would continue to outplay Sauk in the second half. In fact, at one point, their lead grew to as many as 16 points (55-39), with the Skyhawks only able to manage nine points in the first 10 minutes.,
Hustle was key for Madison College against their NJCAA Division I opponent. They finished with more points off turnovers (18), more second effort points (13), more bench points (19), and had more defensive stops (49). This against a team which beat defending NJCAA Division III men's basketball champion Rock Valley College less than two weeks back.
"We haven't beaten Sauk Valley in a long time," said WolfPack head coach
Scot Vesterdahl. "When we move the ball like that, we have a chance to do some things."
Outside of Walton,
Kris Seffrood was the only other Madison College scorer to reach double-digits. Seffrood added 14 points for the 'Pack, hitting five of his 11 shots from the field.,
Walton also added 11 rebounds, six assists and a block in the game. "He's extremely long," said Seffrood. "He's able to get up for boards, able to get out and defend, get steals. For his size, and his skill set, he's a great player."
After just nine combined wins in the previous two seasons, Madison College is now out to a 5-0 start in 2014-15. Saturday, the team travels to Elgin Community College, an NJCAA Division II opponent, for a 3 p.m. game.,
