Box Score The more things change the more they stay the same. For the second time in as many years, the Madison College volleyball team has opened the NJCAA DIII Volleyball Championship with a sweep of Fashion Institute of Technology, winning by almost the exact same set scores.
Last year in the opening round, the WolfPack defeated the Tigers 25-14, 25-14 and 25-15. This time around, Madison College was victorious 25-13, 25-13 and 25-15.
"I think we did really well, I mean it took us a little bit to warm up," said sophomore outside hitter
Katlynn Wirag. "With nerves, it's the national tournament, I mean everyone's going to be a little nervous. I think we came out pretty strong in the end"
Wirag paced the 'Pack offensively in the match against FIT. The Stoughton, Wisconsin, native finished with 14 kills for Madison College. Meanwhile, All-American nominee
Hannah Grahn registered 22 assists.
Defensively,
Sydney Clarson led the way with 17 digs. She also finished with five service aces.
With the win, the WolfPack advances to this afternoon's semifinal against the winner of fourth-seeded Monroe Community College and fifth-seeded Brookhaven College. The semifinal match will be played at 3:30 p.m.
"We have a distinct advantage right now, because the 3:30 opponent will be the winner of the game just about to start," said WolfPack head coach
Toby Parker postgame. "We all get a chance to watch them live and upfront."
Should Madison College win that match, they will advance to Saturday's championship game at 2:30 p.m.
